I posted this elsewhere and my post seemed to be misunderstood. Perhaps because I posted it in the wrong topic. So, hopefully, what I am asking will be clearer now.

I have missed my Mom's dying and then her funeral and burial. Have not seen my daughter in almost 2 years now. I would like to go "home" to Canada for a visit. However, I am from Ontario and now there is going to be a "vaccine passport" required by folks in order to go to restaurants, bars etc. (I am not interested in "barhopping or clubbing" as some presume. But I will be staying at hotels and have to make use of restaurants. Patios are exempt I KNOW, but will NOT be a viable option when the weather turns colder. That is ALL I want to know. If you are from ONTARIO and go up there in the next while when this becomes "law" could you let me know your experience regarding this. The papers all state that you will need your vaccine receipt and GOV issued ID as well. Many of us no longer have any current ID except for our passports. Thanks in advance!

I'm so sorry about your mom. Big virtual hug.

I have not looked into this as I won't be going back to Canada any time soon. As you are no longer a resident of Ontario you need to see what they will require for Tourists. That is what you will be, does it say anything about tourists?

I am asking folks I know there to keep an eye out. So far nothing about tourists. I am only 5 hours from about 3 hrs from Alexandria Thousand Islands Crossing. I guess I will just have to maintain the patience. Miss my daughter a lot! Social media just does not "cut it " after a while. So many others going through this as well. Thanks so much.

I wish they would give more information out already.

So many angry ppl on my FB over this it's crazy. I won't even look at the posts on there.

I can totally understand missing your daughter. I have two that don't live near me, not the same as you as they are adults but still hard.

To enter canada u need proof of vaccines and to download the app. So there shouldn’t be a problem u will just have to down load the new app or have proof of vaccine and passport. Also hotels can do room service as well. Not everyone has a smart phone so I’m sure they will accept USA vaccination cards. But at this moment I don’t think anyone knows for sure what is going on.

I know what I need to enter Canada. That is not the issue. I am Canadian and grew up in Ontario. My family is there. The issue is the vaccine passport that was introduced in Ontario. as well, I don't tend to spend money staying at hotels that have room service. Also, I had a friend enter Canada on the west coast. He had to have a test 72 hours before he entered. (by the way, most insurance companies from what people have said here in another thread, will not cover a test for this) And then a test when he landed on Canadian soil. He said he will also need another test before he enters into the USA. Canada  does not just simply accept the USA vaccine card.

Yes, you are right. People are furious. Protests in the street particularly wherever the pm is campaigning. Most of my Ontario friends on FB post the same thing, daily.

I just flew In from the USA yesterday test was free at Walgreens and it’s 40$ for a test back to the USA via shoppers. Rapid test at shoppers Id now test at Walgreens. Also Quebec has already started one https://www.quebec.ca/en/health/health-issues/a-z/2019-coronavirus/progress-of-the-covid-19-vaccination/covid-19-vaccination-passport they outlined for travellers. Just need proof and photo Id. You also don’t need a covid test when u land in Canada unless you got a random selection. Travel deff isn’t easy now with all this extra steps.

Odd. Now 2 people have told me that they got a test at the airport when they landed. Guess is just depends on the steps. I am still waiting to see the specifics for people travelling to Ontario, regarding the "vaccine passport". Otherwise, my daughter will come down here. She is stressed out from all the ####### going on in Ontario and says she really wants to "get away".

My mom called me and told me when I was in the states. My steps at the airport were easy. They only asked for passport test results and app. Might be better for her to just fly and visit there. Can tell u this much I deff felt like I was in a different country for the first time ever! If the customs officers want they can make u quarantine too from what I was reading online. I’m not sure what state you are in but double check Walgreens for there tests first some areas don’t offer the Id now but have the other test. Everything is changing everyday just pray they don’t shut down the boarders again.

As I said, I guess it depends on which province you fly into, and possibly where you are coming from. A friend from Canada just got a job in Hawaii. He is a permanent resident of the USA but spend about 6 months back in Ontario after he lost his job in Texas. He had to get a test before he got on the plane in Canada. When he landed in San Fran, he was told he needed to get another test in order to plane for Hawaii. Also, the USA border is closed to Canadian residents right now. So, that is why my daughter cannot come down here, as much as she wants to. We are so close to one another, (5 hours driving) and yet so far away because of all this. Top that off with the fact that I do not have the closure with my Mom's death. Gone and buried.

I’m so sorry to hear that. My husbands about 6 hr drive from me as well but now have to spend 100s for a flight. We can fly into the USA but not drive makes no sense to me as driving you have less risks of getting covid. I was praying the land boarders would b open by now . This was the 1 time I saw my husband in a year.

Canadians are free to travel to the US currently, and have all along, provided it is by air.  Antigen tests are acceptable for US air travel and as previously mentioned are available for $40 at Shoppers Drug Mart.  Flying in to Canada requires a negative PCR test.  Vaccinated US residents can drive to Canada also with a PCR test.  You must use the ArriveCan app/website to provide documentation prior to entering by air or land.

As for Ontario vaccine passport, the actual digital passport won't be available until October, but starting Sep. 22, business are supposed to require vaccination proof.  This can be from anywhere in the world, as long as the vaccine is one that is approved in Canada (Pfizer, Moderna, Astra Zeneca, Janssen).  Also, your ID from anywhere in the world is acceptable as well.  It is only to prove the name on the vaccine doc you show matches your name.  If they did not allow any vaccine document/ID then only residents of Ontario would be allowed to visit certain businesses and that is not the intent.

Whether or not you have to do a test at the border is random now, which changed on August 9th.

I'm a dual citizen who still works in Ontario and I have also visited a couple times for personal reasons (different processes for both types of entry into Canada). I haven't heard of anyone here in the USA with insurance who were required to pay for their PCR test. I've done mine a couple times at CVS and it was free.

I'm confused by what you mean about how Canada doesn't simply accept the vaccine card. I have not had that experience. I can update you after the 22nd and let you know what it's like doing stuff in Ontario without the government-issued vaccine passport but I honestly don't think it's anything to stress over. Like cdndesro said, the intent isn't to prohibit non-Ontarians from going into businesses. I carry my vaccine card in my wallet and don't anticipate having any problems if I decide to go out for lunch or something.

You are just not allowed to dine in if you are not vaccinated. You can always order take out. There is also delivery using DoorDash/ skip the dishes/ Uber. I don’t see how the vaccine passport is posing any problem in your access to food…
