Ah, noted ranking member of the brains trust, Ben Shapiro, who does not understand the actual point of the myth of Erysichthon. It was not that Erysichthon lacked resources to feed himself that he perished -- it was that nothing would ever satisfy his insatiable hunger. It's a distinction with a notable difference. Indeed, it's a myth that is often invoked when discussing the destructive tendencies of American capitalism, so that's kinda fun.

 

Also, it's not the destruction of the entire grove sacred to Demeter that brought down the curse, but rather one particular tree which was emblazoned with tokens depicting all the prayers ever answered by Demeter. In order for the analogy to make sense, Shapiro would need to identify which tree in the grove of American identity is the one that will bring the hunger that cannot be slaked if cut down. Is it foreign policy? That's a very large oak indeed. Social inequality? Hm. Wokeness? Interesting. It's a load of pseudo-intellectual drivel that makes him sound like he knows things (namedrop Erysichthon!) but is a wobbly blancmange at its core, lacking detail.

 

Dude needs to understand his Ovid a bit better, yo. (Also, love the HLS namedrop in his bio -- you can always tell a Harvard man, because he's told you he's a Harvard man in the first 3 minutes.)
