Apply for SSN separately from AOS

Hi all

I arrived to the US beginning of August on my K1 and wanted to make an appointment at the SSA-office right away.

The person I had on the phone told me they can only schedule an appointment for me, once it will be 2 weeks after my US entry date (that seemed legit to me, since I read somewhere that it will take 2 weeks after my entry until USCIS has all my data in their system), so I waited another week.

However my wedding was only a few days after that conversation, and since I want to take my husband's name, I would like to request my SSN with the new name now, to have everything issued on the correct name.

Now I found out that I will probably run into huge delays with the SSN because it will be harder to gather information about me in my home country due to the new married name.

Since I don't want to waste any time and file my AOS while waiting on my SSN, my question is - can I file the I-485 and check "NO" at "Do you want the SSA to issue you a Social Security Card?" since I already requested the SSN separately but don't have the number yet? Is that the correct way to file? Or should I check "Yes" and write N/A in the SSN field on the I-485 instead?

I hope I make sense.

Thank you in advance for your time & help.

You can check YES in the I765.

Say you don't have it YET in the next questions by inputting N/A for the SSN number.

And then they will send you a REPLACEMENT card with the SAME number (if you manage to get one now) but in your MARRIED name as that what you fill out AOS with.

That's why you always apply for the in person card in your MAIDEN name and as single whether married or not.

Never apply in MARRIED name.

I agree. I also checked YES on the SSN question even though I have an SSN already. I don’t see harm in doing so and maybe (hopefully) it’ll save me a trip to the SSA office because I’ll receive it in my married name.

There's no harm.

The I765 instructions implicitly say that you can request a replacement which is exactly what one is doing in this situation.

A careful read of the instructions will answer the OPs questions.

I recommend you select "Yes" to the relevant question on both the I-485 and I-765 forms, even if you already applied for SSN in person.  Until you get your SSN card, there is no guarantee that you will be issued a number before your I-94 expires.

Also, use your married name on the I-485, I-765, and other required forms, even if you applied for SSN in your maiden name.

Note that Form I-485 now also offers the same SSN request questions: https://www.uscis.gov/news/news-releases/uscis-expands-partnership-with-social-security-administration

Amaze balls!!!
