Mandatory Vaccinations

We are very close to scheduling our Medical Exam and Interview, but I ran across this little nugget tonight. Is it true that my Fiance must have all of these vaccinations or she will fail the medical exam? If so, I really wish our lawyer would've told us this a year ago.

Vaccination Requirements for Immigrants
Some vaccines are expressly required by statute. Others are required because the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have determined they are in the interest of public health.[1]

The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) [2] specifies the following vaccinations:

Mumps,

measles,

rubella;

Polio;

Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids; [3]

Pertussis;

Haemophilius influenza type B;

and

Hepatitis B.

CDC requires the following additional vaccines for immigration purposes:

Varicella;

Influenza;

Pneumococcal pneumonia;

Rotavirus;

Hepatitis A;

and

Meningococcal.

If the applicant has not received any of the listed vaccinations and the vaccinations are age appropriate and medically appropriate, the applicant has a Class A condition and is inadmissible. Generally, all age appropriate vaccine rows of the vaccination assessment must have at least one entry before the assessment can be considered to have been properly completed.

Has she not had any of them before? Not all are required for adults. The ones that are, are usually batched into an MMR one, a TDaP one, a varicella one (if she hasn’t had chicken pox), and a flu one if seasonally appropriate. If her religion does not allow vaccinations she can apply for a waiver.  If she has had them in the past she won’t need to have them again, except possibly tetanus if longer than 10 years since her last one, and flu depending on season.

She has some vaccines, but we are guessing not all. Some of these, I've never heard of before. So now, we're wondering what happens if she needs 6 or more vaccines. I'm not going to pretend that I know what I'm talking about when it comes to vaccines, but I would think 6 different vaccines in a short period of time might not be healthy. This has me worried that we might need to push out the exam 3+ months after waiting an entire year already

Last month, I had three vaccines for six different diseases done on the same day: TDAP, MMR and varicella. I had no side effects and found it amusing to have three different bandaids on my arms for a day.

It's also normal for kids to have had multiple vaccines done during doctor visits without any problems.

Thank you. That makes me feel a little better about the situation.

If she’s between 19 and 49 she will only need the following:

  • Td or Tdap
  • MMR
  • Varicella (either shot or history)
  • Influenza (seasonal)

Its not required to have vaccines completed to pass K1 medical but I strongly suggest you do them because it’s required for adjustment of status once she gets here. It’s very difficult to find a USCIS designated civil surgeon here in the US who will agree to transcribe vaccinations only, they will make you go through another medical to make money off of you.

Thank you. Very good information to know

She can go to her own doctor now and ask them to do a titers test. That will let her know what vaccines she will need. Titers won't pic up on Tdap though and if she can't remember that one she may be due for it anyway.

Before I was issued my medical packet, I had to bring a list of vaccinations I already had.

Mine was recorded on my birth certificate, so I only had to take two. If you don’t have any record, you’ll have to get all 4 I believe.

Either way, you had to declare whether you wanted to be given vaccines or not. You could reject the vaccines now but when you get to the US, they’ll check and eventually give it to you anyway.

When my mom immigrated, she ended up needing 7 different vaccinations. She got them all at the same time, and didn't even get a sore arm.

Typically, for some of the vaccinations, they do a titer test to check to see if you have traces of the ailment in your blood. If you had chicken pox, or the vaccination, there's a marker in the blood that shows the pox is present. No vaccination required for that one. :)

I would have her get a blood test to check for disease or vaccination markers.

What I miss most about Canada, in no particular order:

My family!

My friends!

KD!

Hawkins Cheezies!

Poutine!

Lays Ketchup Chips!

What I don't miss:

-40 degree weather

My husband didn't have a vaccination record (though we know he had some childhood vaccines) so he had to get the four listed above here in one day.  He had no side affects other than the very sore arm most all of us get each time we have a Td/Tdap (tetanus shot).  Before I traveled to Asia I had a pile of vaccines in one day, no problems.  If she is healthy, I don't think it is something to worry about:)

For adults, there is no need to stagger vaccines.  The lab can draw titers if needed.

Or maybe you have, but under their common names (examples pertussis is whooping cough, varicella is chicken pox)

(or maybe you haven’t, because you’re not in the medical field?)
