Dont need to resort to those measures when Republican voters are being turned away being told they already voted.

how so?

Too much a nutter.

I think somebody reasonable would have quite likely won.

But we were told it was all about CA values.  You know, higher crime, higher taxes, more homelessness, etc.

6.0 million people are recorded as voting for Trump in California in 2020.

Newsom got 5.8 million people voting No to recall.

Do you think Elder is more extreme than Trump?

Dems have a super majority

Dems have the money

Dems have the machine

Newsom was there for the taking but not by someone like Elder

Better Newsom than another RINO who would pay people to come into the state and defecate on the sidewalks. I’ve been to over 40 countries, a quarter of them underdeveloped and I’ve never seen human feces on sidewalks until San Francisco.

Schwarzenegger was a RINO+.

My impression from afar was that the GOP was not that interested in winning, may be they just want the Dems to fully own the situation?

I don't disagree, but I expect once a front-runner was identified on the GOP side, and Newsom had a person to run against, I think it would have been the same result regardless of that candidate.

The nature of California recalls is that unlike normal elections no political party has control over the process.  Thus even the Democrat party has been unable to prevent well known Democrats from running in recalls.

Had the California  GOP party leadership (weak, RINO, and pathetic) anointed a candidate, the fear is it would have back fired and we’d be looking at an 80 percent win for Newsom.

Most Republicans I know in California are aligned with the MAGA movement and most of MAGA isn’t going to vote for a RINO because RINOs like Romney, Cheney, Schwarzenegger, etc have proven themselves to be the enemy and if they had their way, they would round us up.

I would have voted for a RINO if that is all who ran.  I would voted in the recall even if at the time I voted Newsom was leading (he wasn’t).

And I do all this assuming that my vote won’t be counted anyway (the first time I received a ballot, out of a stack of 50 pieces of mail in my mailbox, only my car registration stickers and ballot were stolen … lesson learned don’t register as a Republican in this state).

Keeping expectations low is the key to a life without disappointment.

And yes I am more extreme right wing than Elder and Trump (because those two don’t have to live with street feces) but more pragmatic.

You mean this?

Quote

Some San Fernando Valley voters think they are being wrongly prevented from casting a ballot in the upcoming gubernatorial recall election, but the county elections office said it was an equipment issue that was resolved.

At El Camino Real Charter High School in Woodland Hills, some voters say they were told the computers showed them as already having voted, even though they had not.

...

The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder’s office said in a statement that there were issues with the settings on devices used to check in voters prior to voting.

“After troubleshooting the issue, the equipment at the locations was replaced and voting continued,” a spokesman for the office said.

The spokesman noted that provisional ballots were issued and that they are a “failsafe option” to ensure that everyone’s votes are counted.

“Once the eligibility of the voter is verified, [the ballots] are processed and counted,” the statement added.

Pay them to drop it on grassy areas in city parks instead, as fertilizer.  Two problems solved!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I am not a huge Newsom supporter. I think he's done an okay job on COVID overall -- currently we are one of only three states to have exited the "red" (high) level of risk of transmission to enter "orange" (substantial), along with CT and VT -- but it hasn't been perfect. There were many times it was unclear what the rules were, and the start/stop of the economy was also confusing. We lost many businesses, ones I regularly visited, who couldn't adapt to the changes. Unemployment and gas prices are high (but gas prices are always high in the summer here, and I have seen higher.) But... the economy here is pretty good, lots of new businesses are opening, schools are reopened and the surplus has helped prop up a lot of renters and landlords. I know a lot of people here will disagree with me, and that's okay. We can have differing points of view, and I know I'm unlikely to budge yours.

Newsom has made a lot of difficult decisions, but not all of them were right. I find him too much of an elitist and I feel like his messaging is often muddled. His inaction on homelessness and removing red tape/excessive regulation on new home building (particularly multifamily homes in areas that desperately need capacity) is not a good look. I want to see who his challengers will be in the primary -- we have a jungle primary, so it's possible we end up with two Democratic candidates, but not necessarily. I am very open to seeing other faces and hearing other voices with plans, not amorphous "blah blah Newsom sucks" arguments for why they should be elected. It is not enough to be "anybody but him" -- there needs to be policy and a plan for practicing that policy set out. Newsom is going to have a lot of goodwill right now after this recall, but it's his to squander.

I want to say thanks to @Mike E whom I do not share politics with, but who has explained his positions as a fellow Californian with nuance and politeness. It's always good to hear from voices that are informed, steady and reasoned, even if I don't agree with them. :)
