Hi Everyone!

Any help would be appreciated!

Whats the process to get a NJ drivers license? I have a full UK one and have been here for a year so I don’t think I can just drive on it/the international one I had.

NJ permit appointments seem to constantly be unavailable so I’m hoping I can just take a test but I know It’s really unlikely on that one.

I checked out the DMV pages and it seems to be the UK license has no strength in the US which is ok, just want the steps so I don’t anger the DMV staff 😂

Looks like a new resident has 60 days to transfer.  Have you read this info below?

The spanner in the works for you as a K1 may be the following statement on the noncitizen’s page—

Note: Prior to issuing any document, the Motor Vehicle Commission will use the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system to verify the immigration status of all non-citizens who apply for or renew a driver’s license or non-driver ID at an agency. If legal immigration status cannot be confirmed, the document will not be issued.

You won’t have any immigration status. You have 90 days to be in the country as a K1 as far as paperwork goes. Many states won’t bother giving a license that expires your 90th day in the country. Once you get your EAD or greencard you will have something to show an end date of your status. Many states require that before a K1 can be issued a license. They vary a bit on their rules. Other nonimmigrant visas will be good for a certain length of time like students, employment based,  but your K1 visa expires the day you use it to enter the country. Despite the 4-6 months your visa shows, it is a single use visa for entry, then invalid. If you leave the country, that K1 visa won’t get you back in.

I don’t know NJ specifics but wanted to let you know many K1s don’t get issued driver licenses or state IDs upon arrival. There’s a forum on VJ, Moving Here and Your New Life in America, that will have more driver license experiences than this UK forum.

Thank you everyone!

The UK is part of the UN Convention of Road Traffice so should be pretty easy! No appointments in NJ to get a permit yet though so hopefully not too longs wait

Hey, I've trying for months to get a permit appointment in NJ and finally got one for October. They seem to release appointments on the site after midnight but they go fast.

Good luck!
