And J1 visas come with a two-year-home residency requirement for which there is a waiver, but it’s not an easy one. I had a J1 visa and did comply with the two years and then came back, but I have a friend who attempted the waiver and was unsuccessful, because it is very hard to prove extreme hardship.

SOME J visas come with a 2 year residency requirement. Those who are funded by the US government find a waiver very difficult- many others seem to have no problem (there is a long thread in the student visa forum on this). My understanding is that the au pair J1 never has a home residency requirement.

Just a quick note the H1B work visas are dual-intent. I adjusted from H1B.

L are dual intent too. However  it seems unlikely OP’s girlfriend would get either of these.
