Health insurance help needed (split)

The only entity that can require a SSN is the IRS. Insurance companies, Dr's offices, etc. try to make it seem as it's a requirement but it is not.  When my family moved here the company insurance tried to pull the same, and ended up still doing it. Remind them of this

For what it's worth, we knew which day we were headed across the border and had the health insurance activate for that date, citing loss of insurance because that's exactly what happens when you become a PR!  We didn't want to travel across the US with truck, trailer, kids and dog during covid times with no insurance.

Your wife's insurance card will have a 1-800 number on the back.  I'd call them :)

You guys should fight this. Nobody gets a SSN in less than 30 days, not even pre-covid.

Umm ... my wife applied for an SSN two days after POE on a K-1 and got her card in the mail less than two weeks later, though that definitely was pre-covid.

Thought that doesn't invalidate anything that has been said above; you do not need an SSN to get health insurance, and both marriage and immigration are qualifying events.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was able to add my wife to my insurance at work without a SSN, AND BEFORE SHE WAS IN THE US.  They just asked for name/DOB, and they sent a new card.

This was all done as a "life event"

@Fobosdaemios, sorry to resurrect this thread but did you sort this out in the end? Going through the exact same thing rn and I'd love to know how you sorted it out, or even if you did have to get temporary insurance, where you were able to get it from?! Thanks!

It's really depending on the HR of your spouse workplace tbh. The HR of my wife's workplace was really not helping... They told us have to wait until the enrollment period to put my name in the insurance. They didn't even know about the laws... I actually went to one of the link from the government website and show the HR about the law.

After seeing that, the HR said they will enrolled me in right away as soon as I get my SSN. The SSN arrived within 3 weeks start from the date that I landed in USA.

I hope this will help you.
