Probably not. With SSA offices being very slow due to COVID, it would take several weeks at which point your I-94 would be expired.

I would say you can but it’s always best to travel with NOA1 from filing I-485. That way if you’re stopped by immigration authorities, you won’t encounter problems.

Someone reported that there is a new option when you are applying for AOS you can check a box that you also want to apply for a SSN. Its a very recent change and is in some other section of this site. I’ll need to search for it as the person posting it didn’t start a new thread.

Edit. Just saw @HRQXpost.

The United States is now a country obsessed with the worship of its own ignorance.  Americans are proud of not knowing things.  They have reached a point where ignorance, is an actual virtue.  To reject the advice of experts is to assert autonomy, a way for Americans to insulate their increasingly fragile egos from ever being told they're wrong about anything.  It is a new Declaration of Independence: no longer do we hold these truths to be self-evident, we hold all truths to be self-evident, even the ones that arent true.  All things are knowable and every opinion on any subject is as good as any other.  The fundamental knowledge of the average American is now so low that it has crashed through the floor of "uninformed", passed "misinformed", on the way down, and now plummeting to "aggressively wrong."

We thought to apply after marriage to have new surname on social security number. I entered US in the end of June and got married couple days ago.

Totally understandable, but after the marriage you could have gone back to social security office and they would've updated the card with the new name on it.  Congrats on the marriage!

Hello! We got married legally while on K1 visa and what would be next steps to do? When and how should we get social security number? Thank you ♥

The next step is to apply for Adjustment of Status.  Theres a guide here on this website which will help you, and of course plenty of supporters here who can help as well.

So I got married quite quickly after arriving and was still waiting for an appointment (at the time it was taking 4 weeks for me to get an appointment with the SSN office when I got here in January.)

I had talked to the SSN employee and they had indicated it wouldn't matter if I used my married name.  Unfortunately I listened to them and my gut said I shouldn't have. I gave my married name (this was before I filed or AOS). It resulted in a name mismatch and I never did get my SSN early and had to apply for it with my AOS package.

I applied for my AOS in April and I'm still waiting on any movement with my EAD but I have had my biometrics done and my I-485 status has been changed to "case ready to schedule for interview". I am hoping to see some movement on my EAD in the next month or two.

hope that kinda helps with some timeline info and not to trust the SSN employees saying " you can use your married name, it doesn't matter" 😂

With Social Security still on lock down coupled with poor response via telephone interviews  getting an SSN can be complicated.   Try to make appointment with Social Security, then have in hand your passport, and marriage certificate.  With this you may get a card issued in the name appearing on the passport and i-94 documentation.  There has been some recent changes to this requirement by the Biden Administration but with Social Security Offices still playing  "hidey-hidey" sometimes things don''t go well.  We got the card and  number but still trying to get a card issued under her married name.

The easiest and best way would have been to enter the US, apply for a SSN under your maiden name, get married, take your marriage cert back to the SSN office and change it to your married name. That's what I did in 2016.

You can travel within the US. The NOA-1 is your proof of authorized stay during the process. If you want to travel, take your NOA-1 with you as proof and your passport and marriage certificate, as there will be a name difference between your passport and NOA1 if you decide to fill out AOS with your married name.

Do not travel outside of the US until you have been approved for your AP (I-131) or receive your GC. Leaving the country early will result in the abandonment of your AOS petition.

Thanks everybody for advices :) how many passport style photographs should I include? Is 2 enough if I also file I-765 and I-131 together with AOS? Or how many should we?

Here is confusing info:

https://www.visatutor.com/k-1-visa-adjustment-of-status-checklist-with-preparation-guide/

Passport style photographs – 2 inch by 2 inch, 2 for each applicant, more if you include the I-765 or I-131.
