Hello,

I became a US citizen in April 2021.

I'm in the process of getting a new job now and I will be filling out the hiring paperwork on Monday. Of course I will have to fill out an I-9 as well. I do have a valid State ID card + Unrestricted Social Security Card as proof of eligibility of employment. Which is fine.

BUT.

My new employer does use EVerify. Will I run into a problem since I never updated my Social Security status after I got my citizenship? Since on I-9 I will be marking that I'm a US Citizen won't it cause a mismatch a.k.a. Tentative Nonconfirmation (TNC)?

The reason I didn't update my Social Security citizenship status is because I did not want to mail out my Citizenship Certificate. I have not applied for a US passport yet.

Please help me, I'm freaking out, I don't want to miss out on this job.

Thanks!

Dont worry, you are fine.

Few reasons:

1) Once you are on Green Card, you are legally eligible to work in United States, that was already recorded on your Social Security Records. Citizenship is required for only certain Federal jobs.

2) USCIS updates Social Security department with your new Citizenship status, it takes time to get this update to happen into the Social Security Records. Updating the SS records is not a MUST by us, if urgent, you should do it manually by visiting the SS office.

3) There is a way to verify your immigration status updates on your Social Security Records online. I have mentioned it how in my Citizenship Notes, link is in my signature below. Try it.

They DO NOT.

It must be done by the NEW citizen.

To verify if SSA knows you're a citizen, create an account at SSA, request replacement card.

If your records have not been updated, a message will tell you to do it in person.

If you are confirmed as a citizen, it will let you apply online.
