Wow! That's absolutely ridiculous! Almost 2 years?! How could they possibly be waiting that long for security clearance?  You're a UK citizen. It's not like you're from an enemy state. And didn't they run a clearance when you got your permanent residence? Crazy. Sorry you're going through this. It's nuts.

Anyone else in the same boat as me? It appears everyone I know is moving quicker than my N-400 case is (Seattle office) :(

  • I submitted my application in Oct 2019
  • Biometrics in Nov 2019
  • Lots of misleading timelines on my account that ultimately led to nothing
  • Green card finally expired in Jan 2021
  • Got an extension stamped in my UK/EU passport
  • Extension runs out in Jan 2022, and validity of my UK/EU passport ends in Jan 2022 (Brexit)
  • Waited 7hrs on hold with USCIS this week to be told they scheduled and then unscheduled me an appointment in March 2021, but don't know why.
  • Filed an "outside of normal processing times" request online, heard nothing on that but got an email response on my account saying "Your case is currently delayed because the required security checks are still pending. We cannot make a decision on your case until we receive the results of these security checks."

So now I wait. As everything expires further and further And I can't leave the country to see my family in Scotland.

So sorry about this.  I hope the finish line is close.  Crossing my fingers for you.

So, still nothing. I contacted my local Congresswoman, and they got this answer:

The Seattle Field Office responded to your Service Request on August 2, 2021. Their response stated:

Your case is currently delayed because the required security checks are still pending. We cannot make a decision on your case until we receive the results of these security checks.

I just went through the Department of Homeland Security Ombudsman's Office, and filed a formal escalation here: https://www.dhs.gov/topic/cis-ombudsman

I am now 1 month away from 2 years pending........

I was in a very similar situation to you, it ended up taking me 2 years, 2 months (filed June 2019 and finally completed last month).

Ombudsman and Congress people did nothing for me, all my responses were similar to yours above. What got it across the line was moving states. The same day they processed my AR-11, they approved the case. It's like it forced them to dig out the file and take some action on it.

UPDATE 9/20/21: I contacted my local congressperson - no change. I contacted the Ombudsman - no change. My account suddenly updated to say 13 more  months (that would have been 3+ yrs total!!!) so I wrote Biden an email on Friday (Citizenship Day) and on Sunday the Ombudsman emailed me to tell me that even though my account has not updated - I have an interview scheduled for October!! So, I guess all you gotta do is contact the President? haha! I am so happy!

As discussed above, there's no restrictions on you leaving the country to go to Scotland.

You could well have a long wait after the interview, so don't put your life on hold for this.

If you need an I-551 stamp, you can ask for that at the interview. I was in a similar situation to you, and they stamped my passport for 1 year after the interview.
