On the official USCIS (I-485 Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status) website under 'edition date' the following is stated:

https://www.uscis.gov/i-485

03/29/21. Starting Oct. 13, 2021, we will only accept the 03/29/21 edition. Until then, you can use the 03/10/21 edition. You can find the edition date at the bottom of the page on the form and instructions.

Does this mean that if a application is RECEIVED before Oct. 13th 2021 it should be accepted and then processed by the USCIS?

Thank you.

Should be, yes but with uscis you never know. There are cases where the packages have been returned for using incorrect editions even though they should have been accepted. When it's close to the edition cut off date, I'd say use the latest edition.

Have you already filled out and filed the form using the 3/10/21 edition?  If not, then use the latest 3/29/21 edition, and there should be no issues.  If you already submitted the 3/10/21 form, you should be fine since October 13th is still about eight weeks away.

Good Luck!

For new forms they don't go by the received date, but the date it was stamped by the post office (which is usually the day you drop off your package at the post office, or the day after if you dropped it off late in the day).

One other advantage of filing using the 3/29/21 edition is that the new version of the I-485 form has a section where you can automatically apply for the Social Security Number. This will save you the hassle of needing to wait for the green card to be approved and then going to the SS office to apply for the SSN.

Details here: "For the first time, immigrants can now get a green card and Social Security number at once" https://www.miamiherald.com/news/local/immigration/article253399675.html

The applicant will still need to wait for AOS to be approved, though.  The new SSN section will just save them the trip to the SSA office.  Still progress, I guess 😄

"After approving Form I-485, in most cases USCIS will electronically transmit the data to the Social Security Administration. Upon receiving the data, the Social Security Administration will automatically assign an original SSN or issue a replacement card, as appropriate."

Yes, you're right. People will still have to wait for AOS approval, but then once that's approved, the green card and SS card should both arrive in the mail. No more waiting for the GC first and then going to the SS office for another round of bureaucracy 🤣

One less reason to risk COVID exposure too 👍
