No children, no vote: Fox News’s latest asinine suggestion

The catalyst for this mind-bogglingly asinine discussion, by the way, was a recent speech made by the Ohio Senate candidate JD Vance to a conservative thinktank. Vance chastised four prominent Democrat leaders – Vice-President Kamala Harris, transportation secretary Pete Buttigieg, Senator Cory Booker and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – for not reproducing, suggesting that not having biological kids made them bad leaders.

Being childfree, per Vance, means you don’t have a “physical commitment to the future of [the US]” thus shouldn’t have as much say in the direction of the country as parents.

...

It should go without saying, but having a child doesn’t automatically make you a better person. It doesn’t mean you are immediately more invested in the world’s future. It just means you have a kid. And while that may entail spending less time thinking about your own needs, it doesn’t mean you spend your days trying to make the world a better place.

This is ridiculous. I have, after much thought and discussion with my husband, decided I do not want to have children. I have a stepdaughter I love very much, and apparently I am very nurturing, but I don't see motherhood as something I have to do to feel fulfilled. I respect and support parents -- my husband is one! my sister is trying to become one! -- but I don't think they are necessarily better people because they have children. We should support parents more in this country, through paid family leave, tax credits, healthy baby/child programs and childcare support. But choosing to have or not have children should not be the basis for moral judgment, and it certainly should not be the determining factor as to whether I can vote. Amazing.

i'll disagree with fox on this one.  on the other hand, i think a wiser course would be those who actually pay federal income taxes should be the only ones who vote.

if one isn't paying into the coffers, why should one have a vote as to how the money is spent?

So, foreign workers, or permanent residents could vote? What about dependents of tax payers? Corporations?  Just curious on how that would work - I could see a lot of creative accounting to pay an annual dollar to the IRS.

The point of the suggestion, in earlier analyses of it that I've read, is to give children the right to vote, as the Democrats seemingly so desperately want... but give the parents control of that vote.  In this way, candidates and ballot initiatives may come out with more of a circumspect, long-range-thinking flavor.  This would be in contrast with many panicked or agenda-driven outcomes in which consequences don't always seem to be fully considered.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

We hear this all the time particularly around property tax initiatives.  A lot of people own property in a lot of different areas, yet, they only get to vote according to their own residency.  It will never happen where property owners or parents or taxpayers are the only ones that get to vote, but I guess the Left has no stomach for a debate.

It is not clearly, but does that negate an opinion?

If only people who paid more in than they took out voted, the Democratic party would cease to exist

If only states who were net importers of tax dollars had fewer votes.

Isn't that the point of the Electoral college and Senators being two to a state?  We are not even close to proportional representation.

Senators and the Electoral college are not nor were they ever intended to be direct representatives of the people.  I agree, the proportional direct representatives of the people (the House) makes us severely under represented, I believe the US is 2nd or 3rd worst in the world with something like 750,000 people per House member.  Fix that body first and get us down to the area of about 200-300k per House member.
