Nexus members w dual: what does your card say? Does it effect your entry

Hi guys

I am a dual citizen now.   I plan to get a USA passport but delays are making it a 4 month lead time and I want to travel back and forth between Canada and USA in the mean time (air and land )

My nexus card says CAN on it.  I went to global entry office state side to add naturalization cert to my profile.   Do I have to carry it with me when crossing the border now or the nexus card is sufficient ?   I can request a replacement card online I was told. Would it automatically print USA on jt under citizenship ?

I'm concerned in that case about crossing back into Canada.  If the card says USA on it will they automatically recognize me as Canadian when I scan the card at the airport or at the land border?

thank you

I may be wrong on this, but I think the Nexus card can only display one citizenship at a time on it, so dual nationals would be best advised having some kind of other acceptable proof of their citizenship for the one that isn't displayed on the Nexus Card. I.e an EDL, EID, Passport Card or Passport.

That being said, I don't think it's completely required as the border officers have other ways of verifying citizenship, just don't expect it to be quick .

I’ve crossed the land border plenty w my kid even during covid.  Kid has nexus also.  American born but has dual citizenship. Never had a Canadian passport nor do I have Canadian indicated on the nexus profile.  I just travel with the Canadian citizenship cert, just in case.

Was never asked by Canada customs what citizenship we were just where we live and how long we are staying.

I suppose now the border is open to Americans also so I suppose it doesn’t matter how they perceive me.    Altho I haven’t crossed since they implemented the arrive Can app so not sure what kind of info they require (during covid id verbally provide the address where I was planning on staying ).

in any event , after calling American nexus enrollment line they said I have to have US written on the card now.

I requested a replacement online.   It cost me $25.  I’d expect this to be a free update like when you move and get a new drivers license.

the good news is that the new card came in three days so I at least have a travel document for the US citizenship.

if only Canada had a passport card also. That would be perfect.

NEXUS is essentially a cross border information share between CBP and CBSA.  You're still associated to the original documents entered into the database.  You'll still be tied to your Canadian passport.

My bigger question is how do you intend to return to the US without a passport?  As a USC, you can't enter on your Canadian passport.  Some people have managed to come across by land with their Naturalization certificate, but it's frowned upon.

i can return to USA with nexus card alone (if driving or flying from Canada)

https://help.cbp.gov/s/article/Article-3618?language=en_US

I went to a global entry enrollment center, showed my naturalization cert and had my citizenship added to the nexus profile.  Once that was updated I ordered a replacement card That says US citizenship ($25) and got it in 3days.

I wonder if I have to bring my US naturalization cert so Canadian customs looks at it (at a *nexus* enrollment center ).   When I got my 10y green card Canadian customs gave me flak when I tried to cross w nexus and I has to go to the center.  Hoping not having to travel w the naturalization cert.   ideally I get a US passport in time and I’ll just visit the joint office and show the passport.
