How to check the status of ITIN application

I sent in my MFJ paper return and ITIN application on May 15th.  I haven't gotten a response regarding the ITIN application.  I saw a timeline that said after they recieve your application it can take 10 weeks to process the ITIN.  It's been a little over 10 weeks now.  Is there a way to check the status?  The only thing I can find says to call the IRS but it's really hard as you know to talk to anyone by phone.  Any suggestions?  Anyone who has successfully gotten an ITIN, how long did it take?

IRS backlogs are similar to USCIS, Passport Agency, DoS visa, etc backlogs.  35 million tax returns waiting to be processed from tax year 2020 alone.  
 

Across the board, the government is using Covid as an excuse  to not work. 

I advise patience. My physician believes Covid related disruptions of day to day life will end in 2025.
