My wife has scheduled her medical but she needs her Tetanus-Diptheria shot since she hasn't had one in the last 10 years. Can this shot be given over the counter at pharmacies or is it something she's going to have to make an appointment to get?

Hi I am in Vancouver and I received my TD shot at local Shoppers pharmacy the other day.

It was very easy... It took only 15-20 minutes in total. I didn't need to get any appointment in advance.

Do you mind sharing those please. I misplaced my record so was curious to see what all I need before I go. Thank you.

I don't have records either (I moved countries a lot through my life). So I am figuring this out myself too.

You can obtain a Titre test that would document your immunology (this would tell you what vaccinations you have had as a child).  You are in Ontario. This titre test is covered by OHIP. You can get your family doctor to reacquisition it for you or you could approach any walk-in doctor (brick-and-mortar or online) to requisition it too. You take that requisition form to lifelabs, give the blood sample and then wait for results. Take the results back to the doctor and the doctor will let you know what you are missing, and you can get them ahead of time. Most (if not all) would again be covered by OHIP. I have my Lifelabs appointment next Tuesday. I will update you on my progress.

You take the titre test results and any records of shots you receive when you do your medicals.

For TB an X-ray maybe needed. Still got to figure that part out... But considering the short time required to do an X-ray that can be left for the final medical.

NVC website provides the list of vaccinations one needs:

Isnt it the doctor who does the medical exam will give the shots for whatever you're missing?

Yeah, that is what most Canadians do, because they know what they got as a child and have records. But I lived in multiple countries and don't have records, so I am trying to be proactive...

Some vaccinations require multiple shots weeks/ months apart. I want to give myself time just in case...

Also good to make sure one is vaccinated, whether one is immigrating or not...so I see no harm.

I was curious before I went for my medical so I emailed Dr. Cheemas office. They responded saying You need TDAP after the age of 11, MRR, varicella 2 doses if you haven’t had chicken pox (not required if you have had chicken pox) and then the flu shot if your medical is between October-February. I also just went to my local health department office and requested everything they had for my vaccination records and within 15 minutes they were able to provide photocopies of all the vaccination forms I had going through school which was more than what I needed for my appointment with Dr. Cheema. Overall was quite an easy process after I stressed about it for who knows how long.

It's best to have everything figured out before the medical since not all the doctors give vaccines and will delay your medical until you get them proof you got the missing one or started them if it is one that needs more then one jab.

Oh, good to know! I guess I'll check with the NVC website to see which vaccine I'm missing according to my family physician's record while waiting for IL.

Thanks for the detailed post. I started this process and got my test done. The report said I don't need to get Varicella however I do need to get Tetanus booster shot and Hep B. Hep B is 3 doses in 1, 2 and 6 months interval and I got my 2nd shot just a few days back.

I was just curious how the actual process is like and what all they actually ask in the medical.

yes before joining the group, when I got my I-130 approved, I thought I'm very close to the IL. And they also ask this in the DS-260 form. So I started the process well in advance. And after joining this forum, I feel I have a lifetime to get all the vaccinations done :)

Your Hep B shots *might not be* required for the medical. Take a look at the resources in the comment above this one to help you determine.

Depending on your age Hep B may not be needed

FYI, titer tests don't check for tdap even if it's requested (at least not in BC, might be different in other provinces, I'd check with your dr).

As mentioned Tdap doesn't tend to be tested for with the titers test. Plus for those who need a booster make sure it is Tdap not just TD
