I don't think I got my A# number until I got my Interview letter. Incidentally, it's at the bottom of your interview letter. You need that and the case number to pay the immigrant fee iirc.

Instructions will be on your welcome to the United States letter when you get approved. I don’t think you can pay until after the interview

Out of morbid curiosity I did actually try to see if anything would happen if I plugged in my details beforehand and the system threw an error. So yeah, it definitely requires visa issuance first. :)

What error did you get? Now I’m curious lol

I had to leave out the last 2 numbers of my mtl case number for it to work…

Huh, now this is interesting. It works now. I guess you can pay it before your interview. I'm not going to as I don't wanna knacker up my case, but yeah, I'm quite surprised. I wonder if this is a good omen? xD

Did you previously hold a US visa? In that case the A number would be the same and you'd already have had it. A numbers aren't generated until a visa is issued (or apparently, when you get your IL (that's when I got mine)).

Not always, apparently they are generated for F-Visas. Not sure about H or L visas though...hmm that might fall under EAD approval?

I entered US in 2008 as H1b visa and I didn't have A#. Only when my priority date for Immigrant visa petitioned by my father became available and I applied I-485, only then they provided me A#.

My wife completed her medical exam with Dr. Cheema on Wednesday and she said it was really quick and easy. Her words were "felt like being on a conveyor belt the way the doctor ran through his steps." She also said that she paid for 2 hours of parking at the x-ray place thinking there might be a wait, but she was in and out in 10 minutes.

We got an email the next day from Dr. Cheema's office that the results had been sent to the consulate.

...they are also issued if/when someone withdraws their application to cross the border...
