Age Difference Questions

Good evening. My wife and I have petitioned for a CR1 Visa and we have been approved and are waiting for an interview. We know the visa has been approved until this point but we have questions about age difference if the questions arise during the interview.

we have been looking through sample questions and want to know if a question about age difference will come up in our interview and how we would answe it. We know there is a gap but what do you say when asked about the gap?

The US Citizen is the wife and was 18 when we first met and I was 23. So there is around a 6 year age difference.

Any answers would be helpful. We would like to mention to that the applicant is from England and will be doing the interview in London when scheduled.

thank you in advance

You are not going to be questioned about an age gap of 6 years.

The "age gap" dilemma comes into play when couples have a much larger age gap and it can appear that the older member of the couple may be being taken advantage of, eg. an 18 year old claiming to be madly in love with his/her 50 year old fiance/spouse (which is very possible, but usually heavily scrutinized).

Thank you for your answer. I think we are worried as she was 18 when we met and I was 23 going 24. We know her family was a little weird about it at first so we assumed others could be too

It sounds like a bigger gap when people are younger. Put it into perspective. With a difference of 6 years, when your wife will be 30, you will be 36. That doesn't sound strange at all does it?

If you had a 30 year age gap, when your wife will be 30 you would be 60 - which is a little more unusual. (Again, very possible).

You are not approved. You are approved when you have a visa in hand.  You do not.

Yeah thank you. That makes a lot of sense. It will probably be I am 27 and she is 21 by the time of the interview. But I get what you mean. Thank you

I would be very, very surprised if they brought it up. I was 18 when my husband and I met and we have an 8 year age difference. There were no questions asked related to age or our age difference.

We dealt with family being judgemental as well, so I understand that as well.

Don't worry about it! It seems like such a big deal when you are going through the stressful immigration process, but you will make it through. Best of luck with the interview!!

5-6 years is not age gap. Me and my wife 19 years, no problems at all. So you are all good.

Visas and petitions are two different things.  Your approved petition allows your spouse to apply for the visa.

Of course it is possible that they will bring it up in the interview, and if they do, you just answer truthfully. My husband is 9 years older than me, and while that is not a huge age difference, the officer did bring it up during my K-1 interview. She jokingly asked how I felt about marrying such an "old guy", and I responded that he is not that old but that he was planning to brag about his "young wife" to his friends. We both laughed and moved on.

As others have said, it won't be an issue even if it is brought up at the interview. England is also a very low fraud country, so less scrutiny over things like age difference. An 18 year old dating someone in their early 20s is not remotely unusual.

There's more to the age gap issue than the size of the gap.  Mostly, this is an issue when the woman is much older than the man, and such a relationship is not  within cultural norms in the foreigner's culture.  50's men marrying 18 - 25 year old women in the Philippines is culturally normal and raises no issue with US immigration.  A 45 year old American female marrying a 25 year old Egyptian male, can set off very loud alarms.  It is what it is.

I'm 21 years older than my husband and we had no issues whatsoever at any point during his visa journey, up to and including naturalization. We never even had and RFE at any point. We've been married 10 years.

Thank you all for the answers. You have definitely helped. I think its more of a thing of, we met when she was 18, I was 24 and then it was a big deal with family and everything and we married last year. Just want to make sure there isn't a curveball during the interview.
