How to get status check on my Wife's passport that is with IRS ITIN Department

First of all, I must admit I made a mistake by sending original passport to IRS for ITIN application. I thought my wife I-130 application would take some time since it was with Vermont center and I would have enough time to get back my passport, NVC and all that. Now my wife case is in NVC and documents are submitted for it but has not been DQ yet. It was submitted on end of  June, So I'm thinking another month before they do anything.

Could anyone suggest me how to get status of my wife's passport which is currently stuck in Austin IRS ITIN office? It was received on June 1, 2021, so it will be 60 days very soon. I tried to call 1-800-908-9982 but they always are busy and automated service asks me to contact next business day. I mean I'm fine even if they take another 1 month but I just want to know the status.

Any feedbacks or recommendations would be appreciated? Alternatively, I might have to look for making new passport for my wife reporting as lost if none of these work and she gets DQ for her interview.

Thanks.

Is she doing consular processing or AOS in US?

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

So how did her PP end up in Dallas? You came with it from abroad?

She is not in US yet, She is still back home and will have AOS interview there itself.

If your wife is doing consular processing outside the US, she will have a visa interview, not an AOS (Adjustment of Status) interview.

If you have a scan or clear photo of your wife's passport bio page, that would be enough for NVC.

I'm not worried about NVC stage since I did had a copy and already submitted. I'm worried about her passport itself which is with IRS ITIN department currently.

When I called the IRS ITIN number, I pressed option 3 (all other inquiries) to get through to someone. Any other option would tell me to call back the next business day.

My experience was that they will not look up the status of a specific application unless the ITIN applicant (your wife in this case) is on the phone with you. If your wife is in Nepal that might be difficult, but in the past when I needed to do this sort of thing (with banks, etc.) while my wife was abroad I would do the following:

  1. Have my wife sign in on her computer to a Google Voice account I had previously set up (which is free)
  2. Call my Google Voice number from my cell phone and have my wife answer it on the computer
  3. With my wife on the line, call the 3rd number (in this case, the IRS ITIN line) and merge the calls

If you do call, keep in mind that the IRS guidance says to call if you haven't received your documents after 65 days:

Quote

Whom should I contact if I do not receive the documents within the allotted period?
If you do not receive your original documents within 65 days of mailing to the IRS, allowing 5 days for postal mail receipt, you may call 1-800-908-9982 (U.S. only) or for international, call 1-267-941-1000 (this is not a toll free number).

Our return and W-7 was received in Austin on May 5 and I am still waiting for the documents to be sent back. I haven't bothered to call the ITIN hotline again because we have everything we need for the interview, but we did not send in an original passport like in your case.

I'm not sure how long it has been taking for Nepal between the DQ date and interview date, but you may have more time than you think to get things back - fingers crossed.

I have the same problem!

Sent my passport to IRS, they received on the 17th of May  because at that time it was nearly impossible set an appointment to obtain an ITIN number.  I tough I would have not need it to leave the USA until my green card process will complete, but my mum is sick and my 131 form should arrive soon. But my passport is still missing! Call 5 times IRS ( average of 1 hour and 30' call), sent also a letter but everything seem useless!

Try calling them in early morning. I was able to get hold of them but my wife's ITIN has not been processed yet.
