No one seems to know, I think its mainly people who came in on K1 or other visas that have not expired. We adjusted from a tourist visa and had to go to be interviewed.

04/02/2007 - Mailed I-485 & I-130 for myself and 2 daughters

04/04/2007 - Package arrived in Chicago

04/10/2007 - Package received at MSC

04/16/2007 - NOA received for myself and 1 daughter

04/18/2007 - NOA received for other daughter (delayed by incorrect address).

04/27/2007 - Biometrics scheduled - arrived 2 hours early due to overcautious husband, let us go in early and were all done 15 minutes later.

04/30/2007 - All touched.

06/21/2007 - All touched.

06/28/2007 - Initial interview scheduled for all.

06/28/2007 - All approved with stamp.

07/02/2007 - Received Welcome letters.

07/03/2007 - Received card production email.

Yes, you can adjust status without an interview.

My husband and I never attended an interview, and we got his greencard not that long ago.

Usually cases that can be approved without an interview are transferred to CSC (California Service Center). There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to who gets transferred and who doesn't, but I've heard that if you are from an area that has a longer backlog, you are more likely to be transferred. For instance, cities like Orlando, Chicago, etc with high numbers of people immigrating. Of course, that doesn't mean -all- cases there get transferred. K-1 visa adjustments seem to get transferred more often, from what I've seen.

Our K-1 Visa/AOS/RoC timeline can be found here.

I'm adjusting from a F1 (student) Visa and I'm having to go through the interview process. I can't imagine that it is hard for them to check on my background, as I've lived here for the past five years, only having returned home once during that time. I have a US college degree and have lived in the state of Washington the entire time. Never even been pulled over for speeding, let alone been in any other kind of trouble.

It seems that a very small portion of applicants get approved without an interview, but I've heard from people in a similar situation to me (identical, in fact) that the interview is no big deal.

It's not only possible, it happens quite frequently. Both my wife and daughter were approved without an interview. I know of several others that were also. While many were K1, some were not.

Many think that having a case transferred to California from another service center is an earmark for approval without an interview. Whether or not this is true, it's what happened for me and my family, and others that were approved.

Now I'm sad that I have to have one!

What other visa types have you seen this with aside from K1s and the occassional K3?
