My Brother-in-law in the Philippines asked me, "should I get the Covid-19 vaccine?"

I love to do research; I'm an RN  and I was the Pandemic specialist for General Motors in the state of Massachusetts during the last pandemic (2009), the H1N1 influenza.  Frankly, I could give a hoot whether a person wants or does not want the vaccine, I think the choice ought to be theirs.  I do support mandatory vaccination in certain medical situations, but that should be tempered if possible, with alternative jobs.

This is what I told him:

"You will get Covid-19.  It is inevitable.  He lives in the Philippines and I believe that the Delta variant will infect just about every one."  I believe even in 6 months, the Phils will have a very low vaccination rate.

"You tell me that you fear dying from the vaccine, so this is how I look at it:  When you get Covid-19, for your age and health status, you have about a one in 200 chance of dying.  It's simple: Your risk of dying when you get the Delta variant of Covid-19 is about: 1:200, now it might be one in 60 if you're old and unhealthy, or it may be as good as one in 400, but there is the range based upon what's going on with the Delta variant."

"If you get the 2-shot vaccine, the Pfizer or Moderna your risk of dying is one in 54,615, as a worse case scenario.  I believe that the actual risk from dying, from the vaccine, for you, based upon quality evidence, is about one in ten million."  There you have it, make your own decision."

This is what I gave him, should he care to read about the statistics, from vaccination in the US.  He probably won't read it:

As of July 19, 6,207 deaths were reported by Practitioners to VAERS (where docs report possible or suspected deaths).  FDA mandates that healthcare providers report any death after a Covid-19 vaccination EVEN if it’s UNCLEAR whether the vaccine was a cause.

Therefore, if a person with advanced cardiac disease and advanced diabetes died a week after being vaccinated, it will be reported even though the cause of death most likely was not the vaccine.  If the person had a vaccination last week and dyed in a motor vehicle collision, it will be reported to VAERS

Assuming ALL reported deaths were vaccine caused we have 339 million / 6,207 = 54,615.  Therefore, looking at it this way as a worse case scenario one person in 54 thousand has died of the vaccine.

The reality is that less than 10 people have actually died, in America, DUE TO the vaccine.  This means that most of the 54,615 died of something else.  Each of those cases are reviewed individually by a panel of doctors.  The last I looked only six Americans were actually believed to have died due to the mRNA vaccine.  If that is true, then your risk of death is about one in ten million.

To date, 34.4 million in America have tested positive for Covid-19.  610,000 have died.  That says one person in 56 have died of Covid-19.  However, many have had Covid-19 who were not tested, and many who have died are frail elderly, so considering this, I’d say that, considering your age, that your risk of dying from Covid-19 is likely to fall someplace in the one per 56, to perhaps one per several hundred.

I tell my brother-in-law who believes that “many people are dying from the vaccine,” that his risk of dying from the vaccine is very tiny, but his risk of dying from Covid-19 is large.  I also tell him: “I believe that pretty much every person on the planet will eventually get Covid-19, mostly due to a low vaccination rate and the Delta variety of Covid.

The Government of Philippines has many of the people deadly afraid of Covid, I don't know any place in the world where they have been locked down so hard and for so long, with so many restrictions.

I saw yesterday that malls in the Davao area are not letting anyone under age 20 and over age 65 to enter the malls.

Since Philippines never secured any vaccines from the drug makers, they are relying on handouts mainly from the USA.  I think most over in PI have gotten the China Sinovac vaccine, which I hear has about a 51% success rate.

I suspect with USA sending over Pfizer, Modera and JJ you soon will see barangay captains and mayors of city will start selling those shots to the highest bidder in certain areas.

I had not seen your response Joe Kano till tonight.  That's so sad but I realize that corruption is common in the Philippines, I guess I never realized it would be so common.

Joe's response was very old, and things have loosened up, domestically.  We went to a resort in Masinloc, Zambales, last weekend, no issues at all.  There was one checkpoint, and they just wanted to see my ID, to see where we lived.  We met people from Pangasinan, and they said no restrictions there.

I have not seen any real or anecdotal evidence that vaccines are sold.  There are some avenues that were offering vaccines for a price a long time ago (Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce) but as far as I know they have all failed to deliver.  A friend has a business and pre-paid a deposit for his 30 employees.  Meanwhile, all the employees who wanted it got a free vaccine.  Not sure where he is with that.

Where Philippines corruption comes in is the old "who you know" buddy buddy system.  Earlier on, if you know the right person, you could get bumped up in the queue.  Not so much need for that now.

Vaccine resistance is high here because distrust of the government is high.  Can you blame them?  However, I don't see that resistance showing up much at the vaccine sites.  Still busy all the time.  Perhaps as more and more neighbors and family get vaccinated, the hold outs will come around.

I don't believe in mandates.  However, many restrictions end up being mandates anyway, and the powers that be know that.  Vaccinated people have more rights than unvaccinated.

We are trying to decide if we will pursue getting our 17 year old vaccinated.  They just opened up 12-17 year olds with comorbidities here in Olongapo City.  She does not have a comorbidity but they are very loose about it.  The problem is, we heard in these first days people are going there at 4 am to get in line.

Malaysia also had a really tough lockdown. We technically were only “released” in the past month or so when about 70% of the people were vaccinated. We had tough rules such as, only 2 in a car, only allowed to travel within 10km for groceries, no dine in, no socialising. We had it tough.

I believe the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia were the ones who were hit the most when it came to Delta.

Our vaccines came in late and only around July/August was when they started speeding up vaccination.

but.

because they did that, and now we’re about 90% fully vaccinated with 2 doses, our cases dropped from 22,000 to 4500+ in the span of a few weeks.

I am not against anyone who wants to take it / does not want to take it. But most of us did it to protect our families. Had we been hesitant, we would have still been in lockdown but right now, things are pretty much back to normal. But, if you’re not vaccinated, you’re really not allowed to enter the majority of shops, restaurants and malls.
