I use a pc to phone service called voipDiscount. They are based in germany and have many different brand names. You need to deposit 10 Euro in an account and then you get free calls for 4 months. After that it is a penny a minute. This is to a cell anywhere in Thailand. The 10 Euro lasts me about 5 months. And we talk a lot.

The one I use is called New York Latino (weird, I know). It costs $2 and says it gives you 3 hours and 20 minutes of talk time to Thailand if made in one call, so if you use it over the course of several calls you can expect to use it up after about an hour (still not bad for $2).

I used to use phone card ($5.00 from oriental market) and it was good if I was calling someone in Thailand to talk the whole night. Meaning.. it was working if you are planning to talk for a LONG time. If you hang up the call and try to use it again, don't expect that any credits will be left. I don't use them anymore. I use vonage now and its much cheaper.

I use a company called VoiceStick ....... With their service, I can use my normal cell phone.. I call my number in the US and the VoiceStick service recognizes my cell number. I then punch in her Cell number in Thailand (or have it programed into my phone) and I am connected. I can call her on my way to work or on my way home from work (because of the time difference). It is actually very easy.. I just use one button on my cell phone and I am connected.

Rates are much better than Skype. I often wonder why everyone is using Skype since their rates are so high.

I think the rate for VoiceStick is around 1.5 Cents a minute... and an additional 1 cent a minute to connect though my cell phone. If you use your computer it is only the 1.5 cent a minute rate. I really like the ease of just using my own cell phone. I cannot find any other VOIP company that has that feature. There is no monthly fee.. I just sign up for about $25 and it will last me over 6 months.

I can't say about Thailand for sure, but I can tell you about my experiences with phone cards to Vietnam. It's VERY EXPENSIVE to call Vietnam, which stinks. I can call my friend in China for less than 2 cents a minute, who lives only 150 miles away from my fiancee in VN, which costs more than 10 cents a minute.

Skype is the way to go if the Asian person has a reasonably fast internet connection. I even bought her a U.S. phone number through Skype so I can call her from my cell phone. Yahoo Messenger is far inferior, by the way, for this purpose.

I use a calling card called "Just Call." I have tried many others, and all of them do not have the sound quality, even though many connect much faster. Of course, today, that is not such a big issue for us. One year ago, we had to have a good connection, and I had to be on a land phone with absolute quiet to have a good conversation. Today, I can be anywhere and understand her perfectly. It's amazing what a year's worth of practicing English can do for communication. I still have to have it quiet to have a chance at talking with my mother-in-law (who doesn't speak English). My Vietnamese is still not that great. :(

BTW, Skype sound quality is much better than a cell phone, in my opinion.

I used movibox.com. I don't have any problem with it. It's really reasonable and it keeps track of your calls when you need to print out.

I have been using Skype on the computer. I have a bluetooth headset for my cell phone that will also connect to the laptop.

I buy Skype credit and calls to Thailand are $.062/min to a bangkok number and $.116 i think to a cell number anywhere in Thailand.

The connect quality is decent to very good, more dependent on where she is in Thailand than anything else.

I only have a cell phone otherwise, and using it to call international is completely cost prohibitive. I have Cingular/ATT pay as you go, and calls to Thailand on that is something like $1/min.

Anyway, just another option.

Michael

My wife uses Skype to call family in Thailand. It's the best rate anywhere in the world. If the other person has PC & internet, also install Skype there & enjoy FREE calling.

I would like to find a high quality calling card. The one that I use now is not very good. I am calling a cell number in Ubon Ratchathani and sometimes the sound is so bad I have to call back. Sometimes I get the all circuits are busy try later message. When Chutima calls me the sound quality is much better so I know that higher quality networks exist. I have vonage and the calls to thailand with vonage are even worse than the calling card and more expensive.

The one I have now I purchased on www.ThaiTel.com. It is called HandyDirect and it says that the network is provided by LSR Telecom, USA.

What calling card do you use?

Are you satisfied with the quality?

Are you satisfied with the cost?

4.1 cents a minute, no extra charges and good connections. Been using it for 6 months and have had no dropped calls and usually connects the first time. They also track all your calls.

We used to like the 1 Cent card, but lately I have been having trouble with the local access numbers with 1Cent. My wife gets a "temporarily disconnected" message.

I am calling from Torrance California.
