We had our visa interview earlier today and it as approved! The consulate is supposed to be mailing my passport to me with the visa stamped in it. So I'm just wondering what we are supposed to do next. Can we start planning to purchase the plane tickets?

Of course!!! Pack up and purchase the ticket. It would be also helpful to update your timeline on here so it would help fellow Kenyans.

Sorry but no you shouldn't purchase anything just yet.

Wait until you have the passport in your hands. If there are any mistakes on the visa, it will need to be sent back and fixed which will cause delays. Once you have your passport and have verified everything is correct AND you have paid any remaining fees, then book your tickets.

Thank me later.

You can start looking at potential dates you want want to fly but don't purchase anything yet until you have visa in hand and it's correct. Note that you'll also have to show covid test results before being allowed to board to the US.

It is not recommended  to ever purchase flight tickets until the visa is in hand.  Have seen many, many VJers lose $1000s this way.

Wondering what to do next? Wait until you get your passport then Follow these two steps:

1. Pack your clothes.

2. Leave the country.

Many airlines are offering flexible tickets by default now due to COVID. If you can purchase a ticket that allows free date changes, there is no harm booking a flight two weeks out from the interview date (confirm with other Kenya profiles though to see how long they are taking on average to receive their passports back and adjust that accordingly). If you don't get it within a few days of the flight, then you can change your ticket. But again, only if you book a flight that allows for free changes. That's exactly what we did and it saved us from having to buy a last minute flight once the passport was in hand or wait even longer to be together.
