Historian Annette Gordon-Reed: Jan. 6 was a "turning point" in American history

Quote

Given the Republican Party and white right's assault on Black and brown people's voting rights and civil rights, didn't the Confederacy actually win the Civil War in the long run?

They seem to have won the cultural battle. Many neo-Confederates and those aligned with them or who otherwise share those values have never given up on the idea of white supremacy and a racial hierarchy with Black subordination. That seems to be what's happening now in America.

Growing up in Texas, I remember seeing a Confederate flag only occasionally. We would see the Texas flag and American flag together all the time. I was in Texas three or four years ago and I saw more Confederate flags on that trip than I'd seen in my entire childhood in the South. There's been a resurgence of militant whiteness. The Confederate flag represents that for many people. They are bold about it. To see a resurgence of the Confederacy is a worrisome thing.

Couldn't get past the Kendi quote.  Whatever, rioting and destruction most of the year is fine, one bad act in January a turning point.  Maybe we should restrict people that have certain political views from voting in the future.

What a glorious country it would be if all republicans were not allowed to vote, eh?

Just FYI, you'd generate better quality conversation if your immediate impulse wasn't just to be hyperbolic.

Is it hyperbole?

So yeah, I'm not gonna play that game. But you do you. Peace.

I am all for one party rule.  Based on what the mainstream media tells us, it is where we are heading.  As to hyperbole, maybe take a look in the mirror based on the original piece that started this thread.

I believe I was referring to the Democrat narrative being put out there.  Also, I believe there were actual shootings/bombings at the Capitol, not to mention the shooting at the baseball practice that did not occur at the Capitol, but was certainly a lethal protest against a political point of view.  I would think these were much worse than anything that happened on January 6th, or at least on par.

Again, I don't speak for the Democratic Party. If you want to say the baseball practice shooting was worse, have at it, I won't argue with you. Because frankly, it doesn't even matter. An insurrection was staged on our capital in an attempt to overturn an election. That's what matters. Everybody of every political persuasion who supports the democracy should be very, very concerned about that.

I am as concerned with that as I am concerned with the rioting, and autonomous zones being set up elsewhere also in the name of some sort of social ill but is actually intent on destroying this country.  The only difference is one happened in DC and would not have actually done anything to change the outcome even if the protestors/insurrectionists actually succeeded in harming anyone that supposedly mattered.

As am I. I love engaging in a good debate or discussion but quite frankly it is pretty rare now. I try to do it online and it gets no where really quickly. For example on a local FB politics FB group that I am apart of they were discussing facemasks for kids while in school. Which science has definitely proven out by now that kids are at a very low risk for Covid and are not super spreaders as they previously thought. But the vast majority of people commenting in the group want kids to keep wearing masks no matter what even though it can hamper a child's social skills development in regards to reading facial cues. They immediately turned on me even though the vast majority of them do not have kids in school saying that these kids could kill their grandma by spreading it

Grandma should be vaccinated by now.

I would opine that the best support anyone can get is from the nuclear family rather than from some sort of group-think.  Now of course there are exceptions as not everyone has a good solid nuclear family, but to destroy the families that are good just support from a group is definitely a Marxist ideology.

Cool, you disagree with their message of inclusion. That's fine.

But there is nothing in a message of inclusion that speaks to destroying the nuclear family or a Marxist ideology. Literally the message was about extending the nuclear family, not destroying it.

Don't you know that the Delta variant can breakthrough the vaccine safeguards?

The non-Delta variant can also "breakthrough" the vaccines. No vaccine is 100% effective. That's not how they work.  But the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are still highly effective against the Delta variant. You are at much more risk if you are unvaccinated.

I understand that and trust me I am vaccinated. But this is the sort of arguments that I hear all the time from people and it is so frustrating to hear.
