Cuba protests: Thousands rally against government as economy struggles

 

Thousands of Cubans have joined the biggest protests for decades against the island's Communist government.

 

They marched in cities including the capital Havana, shouting, "Down with the dictatorship!".

 

Images on social media showed what appear to be security forces detaining and beating some of the protesters.

 

Cubans have been angered by the collapse of the economy, as well as by restrictions on civil liberties and the authorities' handling of the pandemic.

 

The protesters were demanding a faster coronavirus vaccination programme after Cuba reported a record of nearly 7,000 daily infections and 47 deaths on Sunday.

 

Last year, Cuba's largely state-controlled economy shrank by 11%, its worst decline in almost three decades. It was hit hard by the pandemic and US sanctions.

To be fair, Old Joe woke up and added to the Administation’s position.  Not sure if he was following his puppet master, or going out on his own.

 

The US - which has a decades-old history of hostilities with the Cuban government - has said it stands with Cubans, and called on those in government to "hear their people and serve their needs" rather than their own.

 

"The Cuban people are bravely asserting fundamental and universal rights," US President Joe Biden said in a statement.

So Old Bernie broke his silence although I am not sure that he actually understands how a totalitarian socialist government handles aid that is not restricted by any embargoes (i.e. food and medicine).  Wasn't there a former member that used to espouse the virtues of Cuba while also blaming the US for any negatives?

The self-described socialist senator tweeted on Monday that “all people have the right to protest and to live in a democratic society,” calling on the government to “respect opposition rights and refrain from violence”.

 

But he also told the Biden administration: “It’s also long past time to end the unilateral US embargo on Cuba, which has only hurt, not helped, the Cuban people.”
