Hello VJ community!

So thankful for you all and all the wonderful thoughts you've shared with us over the years!

We have a niece in Cambodia who is very determined and driven with her studies. She's going to graduate high school some time next year. She'd love to come to study in the US under a student visa. However, she only has the basics of English mastered so far. Is there such a thing as a school or classes for ELL students that help them gain more English skill, that they can then use to transfer to a college or university for more study? Thank you all for your help!

Your niece would need an F-1 student visa.  To get the F-1 student visa, she would need an I-20 issued by a qualified US educational institution.

It might be better for your niece to brush up on her English and apply to a community college.  She will be paying out-of-state tuition, so she will either need money in the bank or a source of income from her family that would cover the approximate cost of $20,000 a year.

ESL?

Can she not take them in her home country?

Does she have funding to study in the US?

Is this the same niece that you're trying to bring over to work in a shop?
