Hello!

I’m posting to inquire about the protocol required for my two in-laws to enter the United States from South Africa. They have been approved by the US embassy in South Africa for their IR5 Visas. There is a 6 month timeframe in which they must enter the United States to complete their visa interview and their original interview (at the US embassy in South Africa) was in March, so time is of the essence.

My understanding is they are exempt from the South African travel ban issued in Presidential Proclamation 10199 because their immigrant visas are “in the national interest” as defined by the Secretary of State.

Does anyone know whether they are exempt from the current travel ban.

only thing i can say is the following

the 6 months is from the date of the medical exam not the interview

and

If you plan to travel internationally, you will need to get tested no more than 3 days before you travel by air into the United States (US) and show your negative result to the airline before you board your flight, or be prepared to show documentation of recovery (proof of a recent positive viral test and a letter from your healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

On January 12, 2021, CDC announced an Order requiring all air passengers arriving to the US from a foreign country to get tested no more than 3 days before their flight departs and to present the negative result or documentation of having recovered from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding the flight. Air passengers will also be required to confirm that the information they present is true in the form of an attestation. This Order is effective as of 12:01am EST (5:01am GMT) on January 26, 2021.

Yes, everyone holding an immigrant visa is automatically granted a NIE.

These three categories of travelers are automatically considered for National Interest Exception (NIE) at the Port of Entry and do not require advance approval of a NIE from an embassy or consulate.

- immigrants of all categories …

They still need a Covid test to travel.

Thank you Jeanne! They are both actually already vaccinated, but they plan to present a negative test as well on arrival just to be safe. They just don’t want to be turned away

Vaccination status does not matter. They must show a Covid test.

Unrelated to OP - Why are VJers travelling all of a sudden? All with outgoing/ inbound between July and September?

To all future travelers - Yes, even for outbound, PCR is needed. It has to be taken within 72 hours. Walgreens and CVS offer, but you have to make an appointment.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Doesn’t that depend where you travel? A bunch of airports offer drop in appointments for on the way out that are apparently acceptable  for those countries who require them.

And why wouldn’t you travel if you’re vaccinated and the destination is doing ok Covid-wise and happy to have you? I have two overseas trips booked for later this year - with all insurance in place and refundable tickets of course haha

Yes. It depends on destination and to some extent, airline. The airline I was to board required one to be taken within 72 hours before departure. I took the option of doing it myself at local drug store than to wait and join the last-minute people who will be queuing to get it done at the airport.

And of course, my destination had this online form that you were required to fill pre-landing.
