My fiancée studied in China for 8 months but is no longer there. We contacted a firm that specializes in getting police certificates from China and the university she attended. In essence we are missing a document (her stay in her dorm) , which the university told us they cannot give to us. The firm told us without this document the likelihood of getting the certificate is very very small, plus they would charge me close to $1000 to try to get it. What options do we have here?

See if some other reputable agency can help you get the documents you need.  Check the links in the thread below --

Thanks so much! We have reached out to some of these firms and without this document they cannot get it. It seems exorbitant to pay $1000 just for them to “officially” document they cannot get it. Do you think that given she was only there for a semester of studying (8 months) they could be more lenient on this requirement?

No point in hiring them if they can't provide you with the police certificate.

Not a good idea to expect the consulate to be lenient.  Exhaust all reasonable means to get the certificate.
