Cancel ITIN application because of new SSN?

Hi everyone!

my husband (American citizen) filed 2020s taxes in April this year and submitted a w7 so I could obtain an ITIN number. He filed as married filing jointly. He thought I wasn’t going to get my interview this year, so he went ahead with that. Fast forward 2 months I got my interview and now I have my SSN.

Today I received a letter from IRS saying that my ITIN application cannot be completed since they need my passport.  I know ITIN and SSN cannot co-exist. Is there a way that I can cancel that ITIN application? Would he need to file again and now use my SSN number??

Thank you in advance!

That is the most straightforward path assuming that he was expecting a refund.

If he was expecting to owe tax did he already make that payment?

He is expecting a refund only.

Ok, then he should now e-File with your SSN.

Forget about the ITIN process. You can now ignore that passport request from them.

Wonderful! Thank you so much!!!

Taxes  have already been filed so he does not file again

he makes a copy of the SS card and sends it in  with copy of the 1040 so they can match it with a letter to withdraw the W7 application with copy of the letter e got from IRS

if ,  lucky even to have local IRS office open ,  it would be best to take it all in there

No need to do anything about the ITIN. They will reject it if you don't respond to it.

Read section under "What do I do when I am assigned a social security number (SSN)?"

Since you've filed your taxes jointly requesting ITIN you'll have to inform IRS to use your SSN instead or you won't get the full refund if expecting any. Plus, IRS will also need your SSN to join 'jointly filing status in their system.
