We were not prepared for 115 degree heat over 3 days, correct. Hurricanes and Tornados are weather events as well.

Hmmm, seems I remember another region not being well prepared for a weather event.

Maybe I opened the issue up to levity with my post, we don't have air-conditioning, we don't really have a strategy for the heat. Even my attic ventilation was not hardened for 100 plus weather. Dealing with the heat requires a strategy. We don't have that for the snow and we don't have that for the heat.

We checked into a hotel to get relief for our dog who still has his winter hair style because it always rains in June. I was very worried about my parents with their 1950s post modern house. It was hot for someone over 80 and we are relatively cool compared to inlamd areas.

Our employer opened our facilities as cooling stations and fire departments had special protocols.

So I don't know what happened in Portland, god bless Portland, but in Seattle we took care of ourselves and our neighbors and drank more water. No one freaked out except the folks in the bars that closed down because it was hot.

I mean I dunno... I grew up with no air conditioning and we experienced brutal summer heat, similar to what we get now. A lot of people in the city to this day are too poor for air conditioning. It's been above 100 for quite a few days now and that can usually last through September. If climate change is happening and worsening, then we should expect these weird happenings in places that don't normally see it, and those states should take steps to prepare people for what is to come.

I spent my summers in the Ozarks without air-conditioning and did fine, but we did have a plan to keep people cool and check on elders back then.

I promise you people in Seattle get and have observed climate change affects, but I dont want to trigger the climate deniers.  If there is any panic it is for finding an HVAC team to come out and give a bid. My heat pump is on order but I cannot get an electrician to prioritize the panel upgrades.  I don't know where you live but I see that Baltimore has not broken 100 and they have a heat emergency on going, maybe they are hysterical too?

It's like 108 here today. I mean, I'm not going to lie, its not pleasant outside, but why do people freak out so much?

Well that makes the 82 degrees with a breeze here in the FL Keys sound pretty darn nice!

And people say FL in the summer is so bad....

East coast houses, in my experience, are better equipped for outlier weather events. I lived in New England for college and even though people don't think about it getting hot there in summer, it can get to be 90F+ with 99% humidity. But the houses are built with proper insulation and ventilation, because it can get both very cold and very warm throughout the year. From what I know from my friends who live in the PNW (one of my best friends is in Seattle), it just doesn't have those wild swings of temperature on a regular basis, so houses don't tend to be anywhere near as ready to withstand extremes... because the extremes are once in a blue moon events. The housing stock is built for what the climate is -- or was -- like.

It's sad to see people not having sympathy for others going through this. This is an extraordinary event, perhaps even more so than what happened in Texas. There's nothing political at all about this suffering. People have died and are in hospital. Keep cool, PNWers.

Happy to report that we are back to "normal" , but I find myself nostalgic for the "June gloom" we usually get to keep things watered.  Inland BC and Alberta are sweltering as this moves east .

The humidity was also not extraordinary which meant a little circulation and shade would keep you relatively comfortable.

Still, I hope I don't see this again.

Good to hear, as long as you're happy with your "normal."

The low humidity was a boon.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).
