What is the value/use of the Priority Date?

I know that for most, the receipt date and priority date are only a couple days different but my PD is months earlier.  I have twice now asked agents if processing is done based on the receipt date or PD and both times they said receipt.  So what then really is the purpose of the PD?

 

Also, when you look up the processing times the instructions say to go by the receipt date.

Priority dates are only important for certain visa categories. Not for adjustment of status.

Well said!!!  That is a perfect explanation, imho.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
