Very early in this, but given the time of the day this occurred, and the scale of it, I think this may be very tragic.

A 12-story oceanfront condo tower partially collapsed early Thursday morning on Collins Avenue in the town of Surfside, spurring a massive search-and-rescue effort with dozens of rescue crews from across Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

 

Part of Champlain Towers South Condo, completed in 1981 with more than 100 units at 8777 Collins Ave., collapsed around 2 a.m. Miami Beach police confirmed the address of the building on Twitter. A portion of the building facing the beach crumbled, leaving a heap of rubble.

 

Officials have not yet commented on how many people are hurt, but a firefighter on the scene could be heard saying there are multiple casualties.

At least one person was killed and authorities said 99 people remained unaccounted for. Rescuers said the structure was dangerous and unstable.

In 2018, a consulting engineer wrote a report detailing "major structural damage" to the concrete slab below the pool deck as well as "abundant" cracking in supporting columns at the Champlain Towers South condominium complex near Miami.  Early Thursday morning, part of the structure collapsed, killing 4 and leaving 159 unaccounted for.

All of this is so sad, and feels so avoidable. The phrase "penny wise and pound foolish" comes to mind, with devastating results.

Wondered if it was affordably reparable?

 

Looked very expensive.

 

And can we keep it in dollars.

I heard an estimate that it probably would have taken around $9 million to repair. But ya know if you factor in all the court fees and payout from a class action and wrongful death suits, would have been a bargain. Thinking about the building next to it that was constructed by the same builder.. I'd be moving out real fast.

Well that is about $50k a unit, so not as bad as I expected.

 

Begs the question who they will sue?

A family friend works for a property management company in the Tampa area.  One of the condos they managed was having a similar problem and repairs were sorely needed.  The condo owners continued to vote against doing repairs because it was going to cost each owner tens of thousands, and many of them were retired and didn't want to spend the money.  The management company, knowing what could happen, resigned.  Still don't know how the management company could be held responsible, but stranger things have happened.

I agree, the management company cannot make those sort of decisions in a vacuum, the residents have a lot of say when it comes to special assessments.
