Thanks for reminding us that these canards about windmills taking the grid down were addressed months ago. 

 

I should watch Fox tonight to see if they claim to much sunshine is forcing solar panels to cause a power outage.

Hardly news. Power companies all over the nation have been doing it for years. Even back in the 80's Ga Power use to curtail our electricity during peak demand and we would have to go on industrial  generators in the Kaolin industry. Another politically motivated meaningless garbage journalism

I agree, I view it a simply a chance for consumers to opt in to lower costs that industry has had for decades. As long as the consumer is informed, why wouldn't they want to savings?  The over all network is lower cost for everyone because you lower the need for redundant systems or importing.

 

Now those 10,000 peak demand bills that Texas popped up after the ice storm, those were a nasty surprise, It wasn't clear consumers knew what they were in for, but they should have.

 

 

 

Post script: if you live at my address and are reading this, Pushing the heat to 80 does nothing to warm the house more quickly. It's not an accelerator.

Actually, I believe there is a connection between the Texas grid and the Eastern grid, but of course those connections are worthless if the connected grid has no excess power to share.  My understanding is that the issue in Texas was a combination of factors including the loss of generating at windmills, and gas operations, loss of pipeline flow of natural gas, and no excess capacity from the grids Texas is connected to.  Based on the fact that Texas does not have adequate back-up/reliable generating means is an issue.  The simple fact is if we move to windmills and solar and even gas completely, we will see more of this in the future.  Heck, even hydro is becoming an issue especially along the Colorado River system with the lack of water in reservoirs like Lake Mead reducing the amount of electricity that can be produced.
