The truth:  This is a grossly inept agency that is unaccountable to the taxpayers who fund it.  Just try calling it.   Absolute s**t for customer service.  As a taxpayer, you've just got a deal with whatever buffoonery they toss on you.  I've never seen anything like this.   Basic staffing of the phones is a joke.   I've had it with this sorry excuse for a government agency.

The same thing happened after the WHTI was put in place.  DoS was overwhelmed with passport applications.  This situation was entirely predictable.

Congress is elected.  The people continue to elect people who govern ineffectively.  The voters are ultimately to blame.  The voters listen to “but 9/11! But Covid!” And they go along with it.  Congress managed to find time to print a billion checks checks for hundreds of millions of people but didn’t add a dime to DoS’s budget.

It seems like most of the complaints I’ve read about are from those who:

* didn’t realize until now that their passport was lost, expired, damaged.  Lesson learned: don’t book travel until you’ve located your passport.  Keep a copy of your passport page on your phone so that you are aware of when it expires.

* suddenly want to travel internationally for the first time after being locked down for 18 months.  Understandable but in those 18 months there was plenty of time to get a passport.  And by October we knew vaccines were coming in 2021.

Even supposedly nimbler organizations like airlines are flat footed.  Typical wait times I’ve read about on American Airlines are over 10 hours.  Last month I had a two hour wait to update a resort reservation.  They companies fired a bunch of people and now don’t have the staff to collect money from sales, fly planes, or clean rooms.

This will be the summer of hell.

Then they should not say "expedited service" is 4 to 6 weeks when it is more like 4 to 6 months.   I applied Feb 3 to get a passport before July 29.  That's enough time, even for these idiots.   Perhaps they'll come up with one in the next couple of weeks.   I have no faith in a government that puts citizens through the wringer while allowing illegals to take advantage of nonenforcement.

Not knowing your background, I don’t know why your case is taking 5 months and won’t speculate

Others applied after you and got theirs in under 6 weeks, such as:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Passports/comments/nzd778/first_time_passport_timeline_expedited

Or this non expedited one in under 4 weeks:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Passports/comments/mllo5y/passport_success_story_nonexpedited_and_received

at any rate the expected expedite times have moved to 12 weeks.

I hope you have contacted one of your senators or your congressman
