Hi there! I’m a Canadian citizen immigrating to the US on a K1 Visa with our case status “At NVC.”

My question is: is there a preferred or optimal way to update one’s vaccines? Or could you receive within the year and it be valid? Just want to be sure before doing so.

As far as I’m aware, these are the vaccines required for US immigration:

  • Mumps
  • Measles
  • Rubella
  • Polio
  • Tetanus and diphtheria
  • Pertussis
  • Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Rotavirus
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Varicella
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Seasonal influenza

If you're between 19 and 49 you will only need the following:

  • Td or Tdap
  • MMR
  • Varicella (either shot or history)
  • Influenza (seasonal)

If you're unsure about the shots you have received, go to your family doctor and get a tither test done to see what you need. You can get your shots at your usual doctor, you don't need to do anything special.

Sorry for asking in here instead of new thread. Does someone have to get MMR again if already recieved as a child?

Do you have a record?

Yes I have a vaccination record, just unsure if consulate will require me to get another shot or will be considered good to go as I recieved 26 years ago.

If child vaccination is approved for MMR then I'll only need the influenza if it's in season why the time I get my interview. I had chicken pox as a child and just got my new shot of tetanus in 2019.

MMR is a 2 shot series and I am unaware of a required booster.  What about diphtheria and pertussis?

YMMV

Yes I received both and the booster.

Same with the diphtheria. All was needed was a dtap booster. Those were all recieved as a child.

Unsure of USA but once vaccinated as a child in Canada the dTap is the only one required every 10 years.

Make sure the doctor in your home country hands you a paper that has your vaccination stuff on it, not just the envelope. Mine didn't and I realized that I needed that paper when we were ready for AoS. If not, you get the pleasure of having to spend hundreds of dollars to get a new examination, plus you'll be able to file later than planned. If you're extra lucky (like me), the blood tests won't show certain antibodies and you'll have to get them again, which means more waiting.

Also, I hate the doctor that did my examination back in Belgium.

Yes, make sure to ask for a copy of DS-3025.

You don't need the ds3025,  it needs to be in the "do not open" package given at entry.

YMMV

Everyone should read this post pinned in the AOS from K-1 forum. Has all the information you need about vaccinations and the DS-3025 vs I-693 >>>

So is there a requirement that your vaccinations must be given by a civil surgeon or can it be any local nurse or doctor? Do you have to bring either the DS-3025 and/or I-693 to said appointment?

For the K-1 visa, it can be anyone qualified to give vaccinations, if getting them before having your medical and interview. You would need to bring the vaccination records to your medical, or just get any you are missing there. That is where you will get the DS-3025. It will be in your records with the rest of your medical paperwork and your immigration file. Some countries just give you a copy of the DS-3025 when you get the medical. Some have given a useless blank one(like Juarez), and some you can apparently ask for a copy and they will give you one.

IF you need the I-693 for some reason when you file for AOS later, then you will have to see a designated civil surgeon in the US.

In our case with the IR/CR-1, spouse's missing vaccines were administered by his GP, who gave him a handwritten confirmation/documentation/note that was accepted at the medical. Note that we were told that we wouldn't be given the missing vaccines at the medical, so it might be worth asking the hospital you plan to go to if they'll fill in the missing ones for you (if any) or if you'll have to go elsewhere.
