Green card expired and out of the US for 8 months now.

Hello. My green card expired 2 months ago. I have applied to restore my green card and also for naturalization before I left the country, and now I realize that this might be a problem. Am I still a lawful permanent resident with a valid USCIS #? Can I come back if need be? Thank you.

Are you renewing a 10 yr GC or removing conditions on a 2 yr GC?  Your status does not expire, just the proof of that status which could cause some issues traveling.

You are going to have problems boarding a flight if your green card is expired.

What does it say on your I90 receipt?

 

Starting in January 2021, USCIS will also begin providing your temporary evidence of permanent resident status on this letter. Individuals who filed Form I-90 with a card that expires less than one year in the future, may use the letter in combination with the expired card. The letter will say, "This notice provides evidence of your lawful permanent resident status for 12 months from the expiration date on your Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (also known as a Green Card). You remain authorized to work and travel. This notice, presented with your expired Permanent Resident Card, is evidence of your status and work authorization."

You will have a hard time getting your citizenship application approved if you can't prove continuous residency. Any time spent outside the US that lasted for 6 months or more will be considered a break in the continuous residency, so they will ask you about this and you need to prove that you didn't break it.
