The supporting documents required for application says: "A letter from you employer detailing your position, salary, how long you have been employed, any authorized vacation, and the business purpose, if any, of your U.S. trip."

What is the best way to navigate this for a self-employed individual seeking a B2 tourist visa to the US?

Not required, think this falls under you may wish to add.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

That sounds more like the UK requirement than a US one, but anyway…. Obviously it’s not going to really be meaningful doing it as a self employed person, so your best bet would be to hope to explain how important the business is and why you’d come back to it.

Fill out the DS-160 form completely and accurately.  That's the best thing you can do when you apply for a B2 visa.

It is highly unlikely that the consul officer will want to see any documents brought to the visa interview.  They simply don't have the time to authenticate the documents in the 5 or so minutes they have before making their final decision to grant or deny a visa at the end of the interview.

But, it won't hurt to prepare for the off-chance that they do ask for documents.  Bring government-issued documents for your business, like company registration, business permit, tax filings.  Just don't expect that they will be looked at.
