Mike,

Hopefully you sent no originals to NVC? But yes, you will need all the originals and copies that are certified translated papers and apostilled for your interview. Make extra certified copies of the originals and translations for the embassy to keep, YOU DONOT WANT TO GIVE AWAY ANY OF YOUR ORIGINALS. Also recommend you get extra certified translated and apostilled copies of all ukrainian documents for your use in the US. For jobs, school..........

Good luck, Ukrainian embassy is very helpful, but make sure ALL your paper work is correct, no mistakes in spelling of names or different spellings on different documents or applications, this will put you in Admin review. Make sure you have 3 years of tax returns, preferably tax transcripts including 2006. Even if things are not reuired, they still can ask. Also proof of relationships is important.

John

I'm not positive, but I think things may have changed already since you went John! They like to keep us on our toes! From what it sounded like, we need to send originals (well, certified copies) of documents to the NVC. So they changed this process up some and also now have the call center, etc. So I've been wondering about the same thing as to what we really need to take to the embassy. My thoughts are is that they should already have all these documents from the NVC. But that said, I don't trust anyone along this whole process to do things right, so I will be taking another copy of everything! It's unfortunate but I just don't think it's safe to rely on USCIS, NVC, the embassy, etc.

Wife's visa journey:

03/19/07: Initial mailing of I-129F.

07/07/11: U.S. Citizenship approved and Oath Ceremony!

MIL's visa journey:

07/26/11: Initial mailing of I-130.

05/22/12: Interview passed!

My husband (in the USA) called NVC to clear this question on documents for them.NVC operator said , that for appointment packet (for Ukraine) they need either originals, or the certified copies of the originals (certified by the issuing entity)-which is called duplicate in Ukraine.

Personally I have already received necessary duplicates, I am going to translate them into english and then send to the NVC. And to be on a safe side i will bring originals for the interview too, because they do not guarantee returning documents ( duplicates) from the NVC.

I know its not safe to send such documents, but theres nothing i can do! I have to send them what they ask, so i can be with my loving husband!

If you read the instructions it states never to send originals unless asked for, if you send originals, you have a very high chance of losing these documents, actually, I dont think you will ever see again. The only originals are the government forms and medical forms, but anything that deals with personal info such as birth certificates, marriage, divorce, taxes, phone records....... are to be copies, and do not even need to be certified copies when filing original application. And copies need to be certified, translated and apostilled as directed for the interview only. Here is an example from the I-130 instructions:

E. Copies. If these instructions state that a copy of adocument may be filed with this petition, submit a copy.If you choose to send the original, USCIS may keep thatoriginal for our records. If USCIS requires the original,it will be requested.

I read the websites again and all the forms and nothing has appeared to changed since we filed. My advice is to read each form and provide what they ask, they are very specific on sending originals or not. The Kev-1 form tells you what to bring to the interview, which is certified copies AND originals depending on the document. Sonya and I never let go of our originals!!!!!!! They are our records, we made certified apostilled documents and certified translated apostilled documents for any ukrainian document.

Dont trust the operator, trust common sense and what the instructions say; the KEV-1 specifically states what forms you need to bring that are to be the originals and also accompied with certified ( apostilled ) translated ( by a certified translator ) copies. If you choose not to do this, you can be put on admin hold or need to rescheduled due to not having all the appropiate documents.

Olechka - its ok to send certified copies, they donot ask for orignals, it would be foolish. For example, you can get a certified copy of an american birth certificate from the county who issued it, this is what you would send, not your original that you were given at birth. In Ukraine, you would get a certified copy from the Ministry, then get it translated by a certified translator, then get it apostilled, then submit this, not your original. You need to bring your original to interview and they may compare it with copy. I have friends who immigrated through NVC and none have sent orignals nor were asked. You will lose the documents.

You have to get the document apostilled for use in the US Embassy as well as for any use in the United States. Advise is to get a couple done. You corrected me on the duplicate versus original, your correct, but, most do not know of this and give the originals ( or duplicate ) to the US embassy or mail in, then goto the US with just Zerox copies which are useless.

By the NVC operator, ive been told that i do not have to apostille my duplicates/originals ? but if i have them apostilled already - its ok, i can send.Which means its optional, right?

If i cant relay on what their operators said, then who to ask at all?

Good luck !

In Ukraine, duplicates is the same as originals, they are usually given out if u lose the original or damage it.

Why i have to certify it from the Ministry if i got it at the issuing entity? Im a bit lost here...

No, I believe she is wrong and advice, be safe!!!!!!!!! OVERKILL the documents. Sonya and I were not required to show three years of tax returns, and I make well over the 125% poverty level, but, they asked for and luckily we had it.

If you are to use your documents in any country and have any legal value, they have to be apostilled to be recognized under the Hague convention or whatever it is called :) At the embassy, it is a US territory, and it will not recognized a document that is not apostilled, well legally. I have seen while there they have been very flexible will illed prepared applicants, but, I would be safe, and you need them for the US anyway. If you want to work, jobs, mortgage, loans..........

As we rapidly approach the final steps of the CR-1 process a question plagues us. The embassy in Kiev requires all the forms on the KEV-1 document be provided for the interview. Because we have already submitted all the forms therough the NVC must my wife take additional copies to KIEV for the CR-1 interview???

Good luck !

i have my originals apostilled, i will take them to the embassy with me.

As i look at the NVC site, i dont see anywhere them asking for the apostille too http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/info/info_3195.html . Going to look for more info and call the NVC.

Hopefully i wont make any mistakes!
