As long as people aren't hurting anyone else, they should do whatever they want. <-- core Republican/conservative value that has been abandoned by the modern Republican party

The GOP is trying to expand its base why should they stay as a simple conservative.  I tend to vote GOP since we have a stupid two Party system, but I am quite socially liberal except with all the offended woke stuff that is in vogue now amongst the Left.  I think quite a few people have found themselves abandoned by the identity politics practiced by the Democrats, and are trying to find something.  I suspect most of those are in fact independent, but are not happy with the movement leftward of the Democrats.  As to people hurting each other, I don't think anyone could reach the level of the Democrats and their allies hurting each other.

If the GOP are trying to expand their base, they're not doing it in any way that makes sense. A 2021 Gallup poll shows the party shrinking, and their rhetoric continues to be increasingly exclusive rather than inclusive.

Serious question: what socially liberal values/ideas do you actually hold? I ask because I don't recall reading you express any socially liberal values I can think of. If I had to place you on the political spectrum based solely on your posts, I'd have put you right of center on pretty much every metric.

I think solely relying on actual Party membership numbers is a poor measure of political leanings.  Yes, I realize you have a habit of placing labels on people, it is a habit you should try your best to eliminate.  I have no issues with any of the liberal stuff (i.e. there is a difference between liberal and Left), gay marriage, religious freedom, less government (remember when all the liberals of the 60s and 70s wanted less government), less engagement globally in endless unwinnable wars/police actions, etc. etc.  I have no desire to move back to the 50s, but I am also all about personal responsibility, and teaching a man to fish instead of giving him a bunch of fish so he becomes dependent.  I am also about fiscal responsibility rather than for having the government confiscate more of people's hard earned income or wealth regardless of some sense of fairness.  If the Government were to actually show some fiscal responsibility, maybe then we could start talking about a tax hike (I know, all the government spending, fed or state level is necessary even though no one knows where most of it is actually going.

Regardless, the most important thing is to have a healthy distrust of government (not just the politicians, but also the bureaucrats), that is what liberals used to be, now those on the Left are trying to make us more dependent on the government, or at least those that espouse the Leftist values/attitudes.  It is time to start living our lives independent of the government, and a lot less offended.
