True fact, I leaned fairly Republican back in the day. In high school I won a Lincoln-Douglas debate on why the US should continue to stockpile nuclear weapons, a view I naively held at the time. I wasn't quite Alex P. Keaton, but there was some resemblance. I've worn my share of skinny ties, for starters.

 

Even today, I hold some of the more traditional conservative values. I own firearms, and I'm a supporter of the 2nd amendment. (Charles can verify if you're skeptical) I believe in smaller government where it makes sense, I believe in a strong military (although not the Frankenstein's monster of a military Eisenhower warned us about), and I have a hard time not weeping when the National Anthem is played. I have voted for Republicans in the past, and I have admired some Republicans even as I found their politics abhorrent. (As just one example, I've always been a huge John McCain fan. First and foremost for his military service, his endurance as a POW, and mostly as a man of character.)

 

And so when I urge you and other conservatives to take back your party and to return to a place of sanity, I'm coming from a place of some experience. The Republican Party and the very notion of conservatism has lost their way, and while Trump and his fanbois are certainly the latest and greatest symptom of that decay into madness, Republicans gave up on leadership and ideas and focused on just winning at all costs decades ago. Ronald Reagan would have been horrified by the January 6th insurrection. In fact, all President except one would have been horrified. Modern Republicans sheepishly and unconvincingly call it a tour group, because rather than putting their country first, they put political expediency and their fealty to Trump first. And that's really the modern Republican party in a nutshell.

 

So no thanks. I have no interest in throwing my lot in with a party that, for as much as I disagreed with them, at least used to stand for something, but no longer does.

sweet baby jesus this - more Adam Kinzingers, fewer MTGs, Boeberts and Cawthorns and Republicans could stop gerrymandering and voter suppressioning their way to power and actually win on ideas.

 

And please, maybe stop pretending women want to live in the 1950s and pretend you actually understand female anatomy before proposing bills that  women with ectopic pregnancies are required to have them re-implanted in their womb

I was not suggesting you join the GOP, I was suggesting everyone join the Democrat Party.  I have heard it is a big top Party, so everyone is welcome.

I don’t think the Democrats have any morale high ground when it comes to gerrymandering.  As to supposed voter suppression, it seems leading Democrats are now saying they are in favor of voter ID.  I also love the myth that the GOP is sexist, they really could not be more sexist than the Democrat Party.

As long as people aren't hurting anyone else, they should do whatever they want. <-- core Republican/conservative value that has been abandoned by the modern Republican party
