I mean, if you're going to be partisan about every single thing ever, maybe try to be a little less transparent about it.

California is doing great.

But what about this thing they're not doing great at?

True, CA could do better. But they're doing great overall.

Yeah but CA is terrible because of this one thing.

Not all states are perfect, look at this other state that is doing well, also has problems, but is a state you identify with politically

La la la look at this problem CA has

It's almost like some are trying to deflect from the fact that California has a strong economy right now and that is not aligned with Tucker Carlson's talking points about how bad it supposedly is to live here.

Right? Literally the post was about how California has the number one economy right now, and it's like a big red race to see who can dump on that success the most.

I dunno. You guys make a terrible case for your particular brands of conservatism. I can't imagine living a life where I'm compelled to either praise or dump on someone, some thing, or some place based on a political narrative. It must be exhausting.

I mean, I've been affected by a black out that lasted more than 15 minutes maybe 3-4 times? Usually caused by nearby construction or a storm or something like that.

Point out something that really does impact your life in a meaningful way, like rush hour traffic going over the hill on the 405 but that's usually based on a decision you made yourself about where to live and work

No, certainly not jealous about CA’s economy.  It is a good thing, but it certainly also has its flaws.

Did I say JEALOUS Mr. Literal? No, no I did not.

And of course it's a good thing, but clearly there is a need to to downplay it. If I still had to avoid the potholes on I-94 and shovel my car out of a snow bank, I might do it also

No need to shout.  I actually enjoy visiting CA, particularly the East side.  I have not driven I94 in quite some time, so not sure about the status there, but I highly doubt CA has no potholes anywhere.  Also, you can avoid shoveling your car out of a snow bank by not driving in one.

Not really possible to not drive a car in most places in the US  if you need to get somewhere

California power companies can't wallop users with outrageous bills of thousands and tens of thousands of dollars during times of high demand, like what happened in Texas. Minor point.

We lost power at some point last year for maybe an hour, that was it. A couple of flickering lights moments. Even when I was in Berkeley, I lived in an area that rarely lost power (maybe twice for 20-30 minutes). Growing up in the Valley, we paid attention to flex alerts and did what we could to limit consumption, but I can't recall losing power for more than a few hours, ever.

I completely agree that at least in SoCal, traffic is WAY more of a quality of life issue than power. We chose where we live on the basis of my husband's commute (he wanted to walk to work) and of course we went into lockdown like 8 weeks after we arrived. But now he's in the office most days, so back to it being far more enjoyable.

Your man CyberFX think agriculture is not an important part of the CA economy - apparently the state's wealth is all down to a few guys in  tech and it's not even its biggest industry. CA provides more than half of the nation's fruits and veg

When did I ever say that agriculture is not important to the economy of CA? In fact I pretty much said the exact opposite of that statement. As I have said I have dealt directly with many of the agricultural land owners and managers when I lived in SoCal for my job. Since most of them think of their land in the hundreds and thousands of acres it is relatively easy to find a nice quiet place for a seismic installation.

I think it's because when @Trompe le Monde said, in response to you saying that CA revenue is up and the economy is strong because of high taxes:

there's also aerospace, media & entertainment, agriculture, manufacturing.....I could go on. World's 7th largest economy

Agriculture? You know that they are suffering from a drought right now while sending millions of gallons of water out to sea right?

Reading that response, it makes it sound like you doubted that agriculture was a main part of what makes this state an economic powerhouse. But clearly now you didn't mean that, from what you have said after about how important agriculture is to the state economy. That seems to be where the disconnect was. I think both of you are arguing the same point, really.

I don't think it's unreasonable to draw that conclusion to draw - are you seriously arguing that only the tech industry is creating wealth and jobs with 6 figure salaries?   and only a few at the top are paying taxes that create our strong, sustainable economy? On what planet do mid-level employees earning $50k and up not contribute?

much of California has been out of a drought since 2019 and what you posted is a recent development from March of this year. You could also argue that the immigration policies of the last administration was equally detrimental to agriculture workers, limiting their wages and therefore the amount of tax they pay

We also send more money to the federal purse than we get back in federal money to the state while many red states are exactly the opposite. something that doesn't get mentioned too often when talking about land management

California is entering the next budget year with a record-smashing surplus of nearly $100 billion, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Friday.

Newsom unveiled a revised budget plan of just over $300 billion for the next fiscal year, the highest in state history and fueled by surging tax revenues. The state has collected $55 billion more in taxes than officials expected in January, leaving it with an estimated $97.5 billion surplus.

California is home to about 39 million people and has an economy that’s larger than all but four nations. The surplus alone is much bigger than nearly every other state’s annual budget.

That extra money means Newsom, a Democrat, has tens of billions of dollars more to spend on new and existing initiatives as he seeks re-election in the fall. Newsom said one of his top priorities is providing Californians relief from spiraling inflation.

Glad to see that providing inflation relief is a priority. It's great news for our state.

How does spending our money provide inflation relief?

I’ve moved to California twice. And am in the process of moving out.  As happy as am each time to move to California I’m always happier to move out.
