Starting the N-400 application online. Why type of Tax Transcript needed?

Guys,

My wife and I are filing N-400 application on line based on the 5-year basis.

1) I'm wondering what type of tax transcript that I need to provide as an evident. I have access to my IRS Tax Transcript online and there are different type we can choose from, Return Transcript, Account Transcript, Record of Account Transcript, Wage & Income Transcript?

2) In the beginning, the first year of becoming U.S. permanent resident we didn't filed the Tax Return since we're not required to because of our income below threshold. Can we use "Wage & Income Transcript" to proof that we didn't have to filed that year?

Appreciate your kind response on this.

Eddy and Amy.

1.  Use return transcripts.

2.  You can.

When you log into the IRS system, you are presented with a "Get Transcript" screen and a drop down for you to select options.

Select "Immigration" hit go and you will be presented with the appropriate return

I downloaded (and uploaded) both return transcripts and account transcripts to be on the safe side. I had seen a couple of people in the N-400 groups on Facebook being asked for the account transcripts at their interviews. It shows the balance, if you paid what you owed, what date etc. Maybe more important for those of us who are self-employed, I don't know. But they're for free, so I saw no reason not to upload them too in addition to the regular return transcript.

I also made sure to upload evidence showing $0 balance for state taxes too, not just federal.

This is a good point. I uploaded the return transcripts and took the latest account transcript to my interview. I was asked if owed any taxes and of course I replied “no”. I never offered that I had evidence of that and was never asked for it. However on a different question I stated that I had evidence to verify my answer and was asked to show that. So I’m guessing she would have taken my account transcript had I offered it or a different officer might have asked for it anyway.

Yeah I was never asked for either the return transcripts or account transcripts, but I had already uploaded absolutely everything so there wasn't anything left to ask for really. Either way, better to be safe than sorry. 😄

Considering you're under the 5-year rule, I'd recommend first confirming if you're actually required to provide tax transcripts: https://www.uscis.gov/sites/default/files/document/guides/M-477.pdf

We have seen several people who filed under the 5 year rule being asked for tax transcripts at the interview. They're for free, so there's zero reason not to upload them or at least bring them, just in case. Filing your taxes and paying what you owe is proving good moral character, something that is important no matter what rule you file under. They can certainly ask to see your transcripts.

The only caveat here is that you can only download up to 4 years, the current year and 3 previous year for the Return Transcript are available for download. However, the Account Transcript are available for all the previous years.

Anyway, I think I will upload them both types.

I have the same issue.  I only see up to 4. and I need the 5th one. I was told I can use the account transcript instead of the tax transcript. is that accurate?
