Co-Sponsorship/Regular Sponsorship Requirements

Hi Visajourney,

So my spouse and I recently filed for the CR1 visa application in January and we are still waiting for i-130 approval. In the meantime, I’ve been thinking about the NVC stage of the process and I can’t seem to find a clear answer to a question I have. I understand that you must provide proof that you are capable of being financially responsible for your spouse, but I am trying to decide if I need a co-sponsor or not. I currently make well above the threshold but I’ve only had this job for 4 months and prior I was on unemployment for a year. I know we have to provide tax return transcripts for the last three years, but how long must we be making above the threshold to be considered financially capable? I’m assuming our i-130 won’t be approved for at least a couple more months so I’ll have more paycheck stubs that I can provide to NVC, but do I need a co-sponsor if I’m currently making above the threshold? Assuming your income is US based, and well above the income threshold, you should be fine on your own.  Note the I-130 is a petition for alien relative, not a visa application.  When your I-130 is approved, your spouse will be invited to apply for a visa.
