USPS Passport Appointment Immediately After Naturalization Oath Ceremony

Funnily enough, at my ceremony the IO said that it would be better to wait the couple of weeks for the SSA to update their system to show the US Citizen code, and then do the passport. He said to phone them after about 2 weeks to confirm code change, but the local SSA office said that they need sight of the Naturalization Certificate before they will change the code. The implication was that once the SSA had done the change, the other Government departments would have the up-to-date information.

Now, of course, I have to wait until the local SSA field office opens to normal business as there's no way I'm going to mail in my Naturalization Certificate!

Interesting, ours just said to wait a few weeks before going into SSA to update there but nothing about needing to wait for passports. And I never got round to doing my SSA update before Covid, though I did apply for a passport the same afternoon as my oath. And indeed all of us (my family) now have passports and none of us have updated SSA yet because Covid yada yada.

Order a passport card with the passport.  Mail passport card to SSA.  It’s only $65 to replace it.

Is it true that now the SSA has "partially re-opened" with a so called "express interview" service that according to this article, you can now "submit necessary proof of identity in person"? Has anyone tried?

Well, it’s clearly “true” as the article links to the original SSA memo to its staff about it https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/reference.nsf/links/05262021015248PM

I may try it later in the summer …

My wife was able to take advantage of that, but she had to go to the passport agency the next day.  They copied her certificate and gave the original back to her.

So after how long did she get her PP?

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

Normally people make the appointment ahead of time once they know when their oath ceremony is. I believe you can make the agency appointments two weeks in advance.  Usps it is a month in advance.

Things were a bit different in 2018.  Back then, they were accepting walk-ins for emergency travel, and my wife and I were planning on taking a trip two weeks after her oath.  If we wanted to, we could have waited an hour or two the same day and walked out with her passport.

If one follows the threads now, people make the emergency appointments in advance of actually doing their oath. But now the criteria for emergency travel is within 3 days of the appointment date.

edit: technically this is “urgent” not “emergency” travel before some pedant gets on my case lol

Yap. I found out late about this. I shopped around yesterday and the earliest USPS appointment at 5 PO near me will be after my trip. Anyway, later, I found a solution from @NYBEtt and did a test run this morning. There is hope as I was able to find a spot, a spot which I had to let go as my trip is beyond the 2 weeks requirement for the government PP agency.

I thought of and tested 4 ways to get the PP. All failed apart form the one one by @NYBEtt. So come this Friday, my 2 week window opens. Fingers crossed, I get something.

Ooo yap. 2018 was different. I remember easily getting a spot for my in laws to renew PP.

My FO is Dallas. I have my oath ceremony on 3/25 afternoon (Friday afternoon, so I have to wait till Monday for passport). Luckily, there are a few USPS offices in 50 mile radius of my home that still accept walk-ins. I am planning to go to one of those on Monday morning when they open to get my passport done. I know they work, because we recently had my child's passport done the same way.
