Negative Covid test to fly? - June 2021

Hi there, sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Wondering what the routine is with getting the covid test before we fly? Is that still required?

I'm in Australia and haven't heard about anyone on VJ doing it.

I asked my doctor for a kit to save until I need to fly, and he encouraged me out of that saying it's over $200 and it's better to wait until someone requests for me to take it.

Does this mean the government pays for it?

Any helpful info about this is welcome.

Thanks

The need for a negative result may also be dependent on your flight schedule and airline carrier. You might be asked for it at check-in or boarding.

Wouldn't it be safer to do one not only to prevent any travel issues but also out of peace of mind and general curtesy for the people around you?

In the US? Extremely unlikely. In Australia? Might be worth reaching out to your local health authorities.

I'm entering the US next week and I'll be doing one.

Hi P0907, thanks for your reply. Congratulations on your visa approval!

Thanks for the tip regarding airline carriers, I'll look into that.

I'm not opposed to getting a test done, I was surprised the GP encouraged me away from the idea.

I'll continue to research. Thanks again, and it'd be great to hear how you go entering the US.

If anyone has more info about the Australian covid testing, or covid test experiences entering the US, I'd be interested to hear!

The US will also accept an "antigen" test which is much cheaper than a PCR test and only takes 20 minutes or so to get the results.  Airlines and transit countries may also have thier own testing requirements above and beyond what the US has, so be very specific checking the requirements for whatever route you chose.

I have flown from Mexico to the US in the past months and the test is only required by the airline, they made me sign some forms on a website before boarding, and no one requested any covid test results at POE.

I'm assuming the airline has to pass on the signed forms to the US government somehow...

An antigen test works, those are like $15 USD here in Mx. The US gov won't be paying for it 😋

Just did same thing in Cancun, Hotel offers for free.  Got results back in 30 minutes via email.

When we checked in at Cancun airport flying American Airlines, you fill out some type of paper affirming you had the test and it was negative.

Nothing required once you enter the USA, overall quick and easy and Cancun rocked

I had to provide a negative covid test result before boarding American Airlines as a USA requirement after my holiday trip in Belize. My fiance has been advised to get tested before arriving from Australia.

Evidence of a negative COVID 19 test where the specimen was taken less that 72 hours before your flight departure  .. PCR or Antigen .. is required to be allowed to board a flight to the US

Thanks everyone for your input!

yvonme, do you know where your fiance is planning on getting tested?

Some info for consideration,

I went to my GP and was advised to go to QML Pathology or Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology, and to make sure it's a clinic that has the capacity to provide quick test results (within 3 - 12 hours). I was told that not all QML and SN clinics have this capacity, and to call and check first.

I was also warned by my GP of 'pop-up clinics' offering covid tests, that they often don't have facilities to test samples on-site and need to send samples elsewhere, which can add too long a wait time.

Did you get similar instruction?

Thanks again :)

Just a note. Airlines don't make the test requirements. They only ensure their passengers follow the rules prescribed by the countries they fly into or through so that they will be allowed to continue operations and not have to pay heavy penalties.

My last int'l flight was through Taiwan to the US and while no one in the US cared about my test result, I'm sure the airline reported it to the US authorities.

I have to say if $200 is the cheapest test you can find, try the Red Cross.
