DS 260 Question

We are finishing the DS 260s for my wife and step daughter.  We plan to submit them in a few months.  We are trying to time the interviews for next year.  We are living in the Philippines and will show intent to reestablish my domicile.  We plan to fly together to the U.S. in June 2022.

 

On arrival in Texas, we will probably stay in an Air BnB house for a while.  Most likely, I will not book that until 1-3 months before departure.  While in the Air BnB, we will be looking for a house to buy or rent.

 

I'm not sure what to put in this section of the DS 260, Permanent Address, shown below.  I don't have an address yet and we don't have any friends in the area.  Any ideas?  I could put the address of our realtor, but I don't have any way of explaining that on the DS 260.  If you don't have a permanent address yet, is it acceptable to put some other address?

 

I do have a Traveling Mailbox address.  My wife and step daughter on not legally in it yet, but I think I will add them.  That can be the mailing address for mailing their green cards, etc., until we have a permanent address.  However, that does not solve this DS 260 Permanent Address dilemma.

Yes, but if you read the I-864 instructions, it specifically allows to be living overseas if you have intent to re-establish domicile.  Quote:

 

3.  You intend in good faith to reestablish your domicile in the United States no later than the date of the intending immigrant’s admission or adjustment of status.

 

And that is exactly what we are doing, but we won't have a permanent physical address when I submit the DS 260.  Some others must have experienced this.  I hope I can find out how they handled it.

 

I will have plenty of evidence that I am re-establishing domicile.

Prior to showing your domicile intent you will still need a US address that can accept correspondence.  Fortunately for us, I still had a condo in the US.

Yes, I have a mailbox we can use.  I just don't know what to do with the "permanent" address on the form.

Use what you have.  You can always change it later.

back when i did forms,  it said in instructions that the mailing address had to be residency not postal or other mail service box

maybe forms have changed but you clearly need to establish a residency before coming to the US 

they will not mail green card to a postal box

I'm not worried about the domicile requirement.  I will do whatever it takes and I think I am in good shape there.

 

My question is not about domicile or the I-864 form.  It is about an address to put in the "permanent" address section of the DS 260, when we will not have one at the time of filing.

I have never seen anything prohibiting a mail service box as mailing address and it would be common to use PO Box or a mail service box for a mailing address.  We used my mail service box for the I-130 without issue.

 

If you can point me to something that says a green card can't be mailed to a mail service box, I would appreciate it.  We may be living in temporary housing when the green card arrives.

How about putting TBD?  NVC won't inspect the DS-260 answers anyway, and your family can update their DS-260 at the embassy on the day of their interview.

I was just getting ready to post about this.  I improved my Google search wording and found some info from another forum, from 2014, that says what you said.  In this case, it is about Diversity Lottery winners, and of course they would not have an address, like me.

 

A1:  I'm sure if you put down "unknown for now" or something similar to that, you will be able to submit the form. You can always update/provide the information at the time of your interview, they're not rigid about stuff such as this.

 

A2: Agree with mom, it makes no difference what address you put. I'm sure 99% of people can't provide an exact address for where they will be living in a different country in 12-18 months time!!

 

Also, I found a FAQ on the Frankfurt Embassy website that covers it:

 

DS-260 - I don't yet know where I will reside in the United States, but the form requires a U.S. address

You will need to enter a stateside address in the “mailing and permanent address” field on the DS-260, as this is where the  green card will be mailed after the beneficiary has entered the U.S. with the immigrant visa. If you do not have a stateside address yet, you may put the address of family or friends in the U.S. that are trustworthy to forward the green card to your address upon receipt. The address can be updated with USCIS at the port of entry or filing a change of address through the USCIS website after entry into the U.S.

 

So, I think I have some options now.  Thank you for the feedback!
