I-751 Case Is Ready To Be Scheduled For An Interview

Good afternoon,

Hoping to get some insight regarding the scheduling of the I-751 interview. My wife's case status was updated to "Case Is Ready To Be Scheduled For An Interview" about a month ago. Heard reports that cases can be in this status for up to a year or longer. Is this true? I know for her CR-1 application was in "ready for interview" to being scheduled in less than a month I feel like.

Side note: My wife will have been a PR for the 3 year requirement next month. Is she eligible to apply for citizenship while her I-751 is still pending? Or do we need to wait for that to be approved and closed out before we can submit the paperwork to begin the citizenship process?

Any insight would be a huge help!

File the N400 for citizenship as soon as she is eligible ( 90 days before the 3 year mark, use the calculator on the USCIS site to be safe, and maybe add a week to be extra safe). But if citizenship is the goal, definitely file as soon as you can. if you can get the N400 processed you will likely get a combo interview where the adjudicate the I751 and the N400 at the same time. Get everything done in one interview and go straight to citizenship. No need to wait for the I751 to be fully processed.

CR-1/IR-1 are visas, which are handled by the Department of State. DoS takes care of immigration processes outside of the USA. USCIS takes care of immigration processes inside the USA, so that includes things like Adjustment of Status (initial green card applications) and I-751. So that's why the processing times are completely different as well as the fact that they are completely separate processes, period. Yes, I-751 interviews can take a long time to get a confirmed date/time. Yes, she can apply for citizenship even with a pending I-751. Most of the time, they will do a combo interview. But that is not guaranteed. You MAY have to do separate interviews. It just depends on whether the field office gets both files in time, etc. Again, MOST people get the combo interview, but you won't know for sure until you get the interview letter(s).

My wife's case has been ready for an interview since May 2019..........yes, I said 2019.  File the N-400 when you are eligible.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..
