I realize you can't get your affidavit of support in advance, per warning on the official us visa site, but I can go ahead and get the police record if they allow me too, right?

You can but the fresher the better. They must be within a year, so if there is any delay, getting it too early might mean you get it again. Generally it is best to find out how long it takes to obtain and then get it when you case gets to the appropriate point. Usually that's about Packet 3 time.

I agree with Pushbrk that you should wait until it is closer till the time of the interview. Most but not all cases the police reports are good for one year but in some countries it depends on the providence. Like in Pakistan has many providences and some police reports are good for 3 months, some for 6 months and others one year from the date it is issued.

Everything I respond to is from personal knowledge, research or experience and I am in no means a lawyer or do I claim to be one. Everyone should read, research and be responsible for your own journey.

Depending on where you're from, some areas (like the RCMP in Canada) also won't issue the police certificate unless you have the Packet 3 letter to prove that you need one.

Maybe it's different for each consulate. In Turkey, the police certificate expires in three months. If that date passes, the embassy won't accept it. So, double-check with your consulate just to be sure. Requirements/dates/fees ... everything changes and updates aren't always posted on the web site.
