Google diversity head removed over anti-Semitic blog post

Google has removed its head of diversity over a 2007 blog post that said Jewish people had "an insatiable appetite for war and killing".

In a post about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that resurfaced this week, Kamau Bobb also claimed Jewish people had an "insensitivity" to suffering.

The post has now been deleted.

On Thursday, a spokesperson for Google told the BBC that Mr Bobb would "no longer be part of our diversity team going forward".

 

Seems a very common scenario, those most involved in the industry are the worst offenders.

I tend to agree, I don't think anyone should be punished for something that happened more than 10 years ago unless of course there is evidence of ongoing issues.  That being said, since cancel culture is becoming the norm, it should be used equally as we would not want to upset equity.

I find it quite amusing the whole issue of having a diversity officer when you consider the very nature of these Companies. Seems that some people buy into it.

Given that there's nothing called "Semitism" to be for or against, I think that what people now call antisemitism (which is always in one direction) should more accurately be called "Jew-hatred."

Semites were people from the the Middle East and Southwest Asia. Semites were Hebrews, Arabs, and others from those areas who spoke a Semitic language, but in modern language, it's usually in reference to Hebrew-speaking people, mostly Jews. Semite literally means "child of Noah."

 

I don't know if the term "Semitism" is actually a word construct, but Semitic would be anything pertaining to these people. Antisemitic would literally be an opposition to anything Semitic.

I'm surprised you're surprised. Stereotyping an entire people (and not just the Israeli government) as insatiable killers is not a look any company would want to be seen as supporting. And since California is an at-will employment state, don't let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya.

You make a valid point. So I'll nuance my argument a little more. Firing somebody because they said all Jews "have an insatiable appetite for war and killing" isn't cancel culture, because I think we can all get behind how racist and disgusting the remark is. It's neither a liberal or a conservative belief, it's all-encompassing. I think we can agree this falls firmly into "actions have consequences." No organization wants to be associated with this kind of garbage, especially when many of their employees are Jewish.

Actually, I don't think the person here in question was actually fired.  As you said, no one wants to be associated with that type of racist and yet we elected Biden in 2020.
