SSN - Valid for work only?

Hello,

We are still progressing through AOS. My wife got her new SSN a few weeks ago. It states it is valid for work only.  I did not think this was a problem, but I wanted to add her to utility bills for proof of relationship and she did not show up in utility companies system. Is this because it is new?

I'm worried because here in Michigan she cannot get a state ID or license without a SSN. Has anyone experienced this?

It probably says "Valid for work only with DHS authorization". So it's not a valid for work only SSN.

Utility system usually look at credit report to provide the service to a person and they didn't find any history/report on that SSN as it's new. That could be the case.

That SSN can be used to get ID/DL though as they aren't worried about credit history.

Read the text on the card again, I think the complete text is "valid for work only with DHS authorization". This simply means she will need to show an EAD or greencard to an employer to prove she is authorized to work.

It may take a little while for her SSN to show up in any systems, but that is not related to that text on the card.

Edit: @arken apparently types faster than me...

The issue isn't with the SSN. It's more likely because she has zero credit history in the US. We ran into the same issue with me (no credit history with a valid SSN). I don't know Michigan's requirements on licenses for immigrants, so I won't comment on that. Double-check the Michigan DMV requirements.

Vjers, does SSN obtained through AOS state this? I doubt. I never got mine through AOS, so I may be wrong.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

It does as most K-1 apply for SSN before sending in for AOS. Thus it comes with the DHS verbiage until they remove it by providing an EAD or GC (or some folks don't do it and later have an issue with employer demanding to see their GC).

Ooo I see

You can only remove it with GC, that I know.

Mine had the same verbiage as I got it while on student visa. I went down to the SSO to remove it when I got my EAD. I was informed it was only possible with GC. Nonetheless, as soon as I got my GC, I went back and had it removed to avoid what you just mentioned on the last part of your sentence.

Thank you everyone,

Yes it does state valid for work only with DHS authorization. That makes sense now. I was reading it incorrectly.

They can't remove it with an EAD, only green card.
